I'm an Automotive Interior Systems Production Technician.

I work for JCI,currently doing injection molding making interior panels and trim for GM,Chrysler and Nissan. Until November, for the last year and a half,I worked at another JCI plant building the seats for Chrysler (LX cars). I loved that job,but I got layed off with 50 others due to production cut backs because the cars aren't selling. My current job, which I hate,is in jepoardy because we lost our GM contract which is about 80% of our business, and that just leaves us with small portions or Chrysler and Nissan left. If we can't pick up another contract, the plant will be closed by the end of the year.

So,since I hate my job and could care less if I get fired or layed off,I'm planning to go get my fork lift licence by this spring, and if I decide to do any post secondary education,I'm looking into autobody paint and repair, except I don't have the initiative to go back to school,so I'm kinda slacking in that aspect. I know it's better to do it now because I could be kicking myself in the head a couple years down the road, but I'm happy just working right now. It pays the bills.

My parents always told me growing up that I don't want to be a joe slugging it in a factory. Well,I've been doing that for 2 years so far and I actually quite like it.

The JCI I worked at that did the seating is in good shape, they just got screwed out of jobs because of Chrysler and a drop in demand. We had to cut production from 68 Jobs per Hour to 65,and to do that they had to lay off 50 employees. They want to eliminate the midnight shift, but they have a contract with Chrysler's Brampton assembly plant where it has to stay in place till 2009 when the Challenger (LY platform) is released.

The plant I'm at now used to be Blackhawk Plastics, and they were bought out by JCI and now Plastech has taken our GM contract, which is the majority ouf our business. We make all of the plastic interior components for the Grand Prix,Lacrosse and Impala (all the GM Oshawa built cars). We also do the door panels and some other small bits for DCX LX and some small stuff for Nissan.

I've been with JCI since June 2005,and it's too bad that it's a rocky road, because I'm almost at 2 years seniority and slowly climbing the ladder.

From what I can see,it doesn't look so much like it's JCI that is in bad shape,it's their customer companies that are in bad shape. JCI is just a supplier,so they can just as easily pick up a contract as easily as they can lose one, plus JCI is such a huge company too, they don't have much to worry about. The only thing that makes or breaks a JCI product is the assembly stage, and that all comes down to the employees, and the difference between the ones who don't give a shit, and the ones that do. And I say that speaking from direct experience at the seating plant, where I would go in every day and do the job to the best of my ability and have pride in my work. Then,I'd be working next to someone who's doing a sloppy job and the product generally looks like ass,and it gets shipped, whereas if I had been on QC,I'd have rejected it,and then they wonder why we keep getting NC tickets and quality alerts from DCX.

The plant I worked in won 3 awards last year of QC, production and safety. Thats out of all the JCI plants that build power seat tracks all though your right about the QC problems and every plant has problems with that every now and then. but trust me JCI plans to make its Auto division smaller putting more into fewer plants. The company that bought us out still builds the tracks for JCI. And I lost 8 years of seniority with JCI but the company that bought us out gave me 2.78 years with them. But soon as I get author job I'm out the door

yeah, you're right about the downsizing. The Milton plant here builds the seats for the Corolla,Matrix and Lexus RX suv,and they want to bring the operations up to the LX plant and run them together in the same building.

The LX plant is also the highest paid JCI plant in all of North America. We didn't make any parts at the LX plant either, just strictly assembly. All the seat covers came presewn from Mexico and Africa, and the frames, panels, foam and wiring all came from other suppliers and all we did was put it together to make the finished product.
