Yeeaahhh! New job!

Well,got myself a new job this morning!

I had applied to this company like just after Christmas and they called me Thursday afternoon and I went for an interview this morning and they gave me the job on the spot and I start tomorrow!

Interestingly enough,I was supposed to be on a 1 week layoff at work this week,and when I got home from the interview there was a message on my machine saying that they had permanently layed me off! How sweet is that?! I hated that job,and the people I worked with. I was doing injection molding making plastic interior pieces for GM and Chrysler and I was like the only white guy there and the only person who could speak fluent english. Plus the job sucked ass,and I had to drive an hour and 10 mins to get there and did 800km a week commuting and spending $60 to $120 on gas a week.

Now,at this place I just got hired at,they make PVC and composite deck lattice,and do injection molding,extrusion and general labour. It's not a glamourous job my any means,but this is a full time job and not a temp contract job like I was on at my last 2 jobs,so I get benefits and stuff at this one,which is great. In their ad in the paper,it also mentions that they were awarded with being one of the 50 best managed companies in Canada. I also have the opportunity to get my fork lift licence through them and become a fork lift driver,and there's lots of room for advancement in this company,so it looks pretty good. Not to mention it's shaving about 25 mins off my commute!

My pay rate is the same for now,but I get a raise in 3 months and 6 months and then I think some more after that.

Go me! lol

This is my first non automotive related job in like 2 and a half years,so it'll be a bit of a change.

For a summer job while I was in high school,I worked with a heating and air conditioning company and did lots of ductwork and stuff. It's was interesting,but not really my choice of a career path even though they can make some damn good money. While I was in grade 12,I did co-op and worked at a performance shop here they specialized in rotaries and all sorts of crazy stuff and worked full time with them for about a year and a half before I left and got into the factory thing. I've worked at the supplier that makes the unibody components for the Honda SUVs/"truck"/vans,and JCI where I made the seats for Chrysler LX,and just recently,JCI doing plastics molding for GM and Chrysler.

Career wise,I would like to stay in automotive,I'm still debating to go to school for autobody paint & repair. I probably should,but I just can't hack the fact of sitting in a classroom again...

Congrats Mike!!!! Even though the pay is the same, benefits are definately worth having. Room for advancement is also very valuable. Question, how does Canada handle health insuance? W/o insurance in the US, you have to pay full price every time you see the doc (or anybody else).

thanks! We're lucky here and have free health care. We basically have it made here when it comes to that,but on the down side,we have major doctor shortages,over crowding in hospitals,long wait times for surgeries and stuff. I'm not 100% sure,but I think there is some stuff we have to pay for when it comes to health care,but yeah,it's pretty much free. I'm sure another Canadian member could fill you in on some details or correct me if I'm wrong on some things.

As for the pay,it starts me at the same rate as what I'm making now,which is just fine with me,but knowing there are raises ad opportunity for advancement is good in my books!

man,there is tons of automotive manufacturing here in Ontario. You have it made if you can get in full time to either the manufacturer itself,or even a supplier company.

Here,we build the Civic,Ridgeline,Odyssey,MDX,Pilot,CRV,RDX (Alliston)300C/Charger/Magnum (Brampton),Caravan (Windsor I think),F150,Freestar,Edge (Oakville) &,Crown Vic/Grand Marquis (St.Thomas I think),Grand Prix,Monte Carlo,Impala,Lacrosse (Oshawa),Corolla,Matrix and Lexus RX suv. I think they make the Solara too (Cambridge) and there's a new plant opening next year to build the RAV4 in Woodstock,which is near the Cambridge plant. I think there's a few others. Those are all I know off the top of my head. With that many manufacturers,there are TONS of suppliers like JCI,Blackhawk,Plastech,Dana,KTH,Greening Donald,Yom (sp?...Honda supplier) and HiSan just to name a few off the top of my head. I've worked on contract for KTH and JCI. Both are fantastic companies if you can get in full time.

I thought I read somewhere that Canada had free healthcare. But, like you said, cost may be free but there are other drawbacks that you have to deal with. Eitherway, I think the US could learn a few things from there neighbor to the North.

We're on top for a reason eh.
