Todd, I don't remmber quit well, but were'nt you the one that got that stick welder from someone for $30? If you are I would'nt use it. Get wirefeed, IMO!
Practice on steel the same thickness as the steel you'll be doing. If I were you, cut some of the frames that you have and practice doing lap, fillet, and joint welds. Pushing and pulling the puddle as well as vertical welds.
If you want to also know if you are welding good enough for structural areas, drill a hole in a plate and do a plug weld.
In order to know if you have the right amount of penetration look on the back of the plates. If it looks like the weld went through, you "burned through". This is bad. You want to see what I would call distortion. It welded, but it did'nt go all the way through.
Put all your welded plates on to a vice, take a hammer or some locking pliers and work the plates in different ways. If the plates DO NOT break at the welds or do not break AT ALL, your GOOD TO GO!
