Sounds like the coil pack or the wiring to them is bad. Very well known problem. Everything gets brittle under there. Make sure your grounds are good.

There's the specs for the Sportage coil packs. Test them and see how they compare.

my buddy was having that problem on a different car but it might help, check all your grounds from battery to frame and to motor. make sure there large enough. good luck!!

I'm done fucking with this thing just might sell it don't think ill do another Kia swap

Got this thing back to me. I did the swap for him. ECU has corrosion and burns on the board.

I brought it to my main shop and ran an O-scope on the cam and crank sensor outputs. They are alright. The ECU is getting good power and ground and signals from everything. The ECU is not sending signal to run the fuel pump, injectors or ignition coils. I also used signal generators to simulate crank and cam position signals and got no response from the ECU. Have a used ECU on the way.

These ECU's live in the floor of the kia Sportages. So its likely it had previous corrosion damage and just now has given up completely. I did notice a few issues similar to the problems he has (random hunting idle) but I had assumed I had fixed it, since it didn't do it again in my truck or his while I had it.

I also can connect to, but not pull any codes, get live data, or access any diagnostics on the ECU any more, so something is wrong with it.

So the Kia swap is pretty straight forward if you have a complete donor vehicle, right?
I'm assuming the hardest part is the sensor in the transmission bell... and megasquirt is only needed for turbo applications... Is that correct?

You are correct

Confirmed that another ECU cleared all problems so far. Should be back to Dave in the near future.

Yes, the Kia swap is pretty straight forward. A lot of ways you can do it, using various parts from Kia or Mazda. I have a write-up with several ways to do the swap in the swap section on Mazdatrucking. As well as full measurements on the crank sensor mounting.

10-4, good write-up Silentdawn. I encountered the stupid oil filter adapter problem yesterday. I destroyed it by trying to use the gasket from the fillter between the block and adpater.

Seemed like it was going to work, until I began to tighten it down, and then....,
"SNAP"
So into the trash can it went and I am going to just use the Mazda filter. I have to go to the JY to get the filter stud thingee from a wrecked B2000 or B2200 to use in the Kia block.

Thanks for the Write-up! It is helping me a lot, except I forget to check it sometimes and make the same Ooops! mistakes.

Yeah..I hate those filter adapters with a loathing passion.

So...Bad news.

I had driven this truck 3 times...about 20 miles total. Ran fine with no problems what-so-ever.

Poor Dave drives all the way over (with family) to pick it up. I was at work, so planned for him to just get it and drive it back to his home. Not 2 miles down the road he calls me...It is sputtering, misfiring, no power, won't get over 50 mph.

What the freaking crap.

I happen to be in the area (because of my own mazda break-down problems on my 4X4 B2600i) so I run the codes. 17 codes stored. 2 of note being MAP/baro sensor and cam sensor. The engine doesn't have a MAP, its MAF...Also the exhaust doesn't have a heat shield and the intake and air filter and intake air temp sensor is about 6 inches directly ontop of the exhaust. So I'm THINKING, its a combination of cam sensor and too high of an intake air temp for the ECU to get a correct fuel map for. So I'm going to replace his cam sensor, MAF sensor and make an intake pipe to draw cooler air. And then find some way to get the truck to him on my own time.

I'm so terribly over mazdas right now. With his break down and my mazda being broken down 60 miles away at work in the pouring rain...
