I have an 87 B2000 and it has a blown Headgasket and I know you can swap MPI engine into it. I have an opprotunity to pick up and entire 89 Probe GT 2.2 Turbo. Would this swap into the truck.
I know I have to swap in a radiator with electric fans, and a different Fuel Pump and I have to bring over the engine Harness and computer, but would the turbo interfere with the frame at all and are turbo motors still F blocks?
I was thinking about a 302 swap but I need this truck for a daily driver and cant afford gas and the cost to build the motor the way it should be built. Plus I am not that good of a fabricator yet. I can do simple stuff and moderate things, but I think motor mounts right now might be a little hard.

Also does the car engine have to be from a manual car to bolt the manual truck tranny to it?

its been done before, the turbo motors are F2T, later (like your 89) are 12valve head. common foibles:


distributor hits the firewall, needs mod.

intake faces firewall, you have to cut and reweld to face forward.

turbo outlet faces forward, you need to make a special downpipe to make a u turn.

there is a few of these around, notably is B2200GT on SSM although I dont know if it runs yet. Sure is clean though.

You will need the proper flywheel to mate to your truck, if you use a manual trans you will need the manual flywheel. I dont think the truck flywheel will bolt to the turbo crank, but I could be wrong on that.

so it would probably be easier to fix the headgasket than to swap the motor and wait for no emissions to put a V8 in it.

so your saying there is a difference in the crankshaft of a turbo and non turbo vehicle?

most turbo cranks are forged, non turbo cranks are not usually (although you can have a forged crank on a non turbo, my 92 318i had a forged crank, ironically my 98 318i does not)

The truck crank I know is cast, I know the F2t crank is forged, I'm not sure of any difference in the flywheel mounting but wanted to mention it in case the flywheel wasnt interchangable.

Russ- I think the flywheels are interchangeable. They both have the mazda 6 bolt crank pattern. I think a mx-6/626/probe all use the same clutch and throw out bearing as a B2000 truck. Now the Kia motor- it's different- damn 8 bolt pattern- but the b2000/ 626 clutch bolts right up to it. I think even the starters on a mx-6/626/ probe are the same as a B200/2200 truck. I know that the alternators are similar- just a little bit more amperage and different pulleys- serpentine style.

Actually if you use the turbo block with the truck head , the turbo manifold bolts to the truck head.known fact.then if you really want to get crazy go find a 83-86 626 2.0i that intake manifold bolts to the truck head then you us the ecu from the 2.0i to control the efi and you have one seriously bastardized mazda engine.Ihave this combo on an engine stand right now. the only problem is if you have a body dropped truck the intake piping from the compressor side of the turbo runs directly over the valve cover and the hood when you try to close it goesBONGGGG.oh also you need to chop off the pre-cat and mod it with a new flange or the exhaust exiting the turbo runs through the motor mount. so if you are up for some serious modding good luck. If you have any questions about this project let me know i will share any info i have.

oh. ps the truck flywheel and clutch and tranny are a direct swap. but you do need the manual trans harness&ecu from a donor turbo vehicle, that may be a problem if your donor is an auto.

shawn, how will the mazda 2.0i 626 computer know when boost comes in? How will you retard the timing? I have a factory mazda B2200 FI intake- similar to the 626i. I also have a ford probe/626 turbo and manifold. I just need an ECU to run it all.

The fi from a 20i is a little different but what ever. you could do a couple of things as far as tuning,cheapest thing to do would be nothing... if you run 4-7 psi it would be fine the stock ecu would do the whole thing for you. you already have a turbo ecu with the donor vehicle. now if you upgrade beyond the stock turbo and need to have timing & fuel control take a look at megasquirt & spark.very effective,easier to tune/play with than most all other ecus. the stock unit is fine unless you really want to get nuts.The first time i saw that setup was on a buddy of mine's truck who had it dyno at 170@ the wheels with no tuning and a broken wastegate(unbeknownst to either of us until the turbo came apart)not bad for a tired old 100hp truckengine.
