last week my truck started having major issues. i'd be driving and it would all of a sudden stall which i was usually able to restart right after. couple days later driving to work it backfired really bad and got really hard to start and then eventually died a few days later after getting harder and harder to start

so i replaced air filter (old one hadn't been changed in ages) in hopes it would fix it. still no go, replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, motor gets fuel as you can smell it when it cranks as well as on the plugs but won't start.

any suggestions as to where to go from here, i'm new to all of this and this is the extent of my knowledge

thanks in advance

If gas on the plugs u r getting no fire. Have you ever changed the coil in the truck. If it has a bunch of miles the old Hanjin coil may be kerput. Pull a plug ,leave it in the plug wire, ground it on the engine block , try to start truck and see if the plug is firing. If not, replace the coil. Also check to be sure the battery wires are not corroded and the cables are in good shape. BJ

where exactally is the coil, i haven't changed that or has ever been changed to my knowledge so that could be it

trace the plug wire on the center of the distributor cap and on the other end is the coil

it should be right around the driver side headlight on the core support

it looks like this

that's what i figured it was just wasn't sure, any way to test the coil to see if it's good or just replace it? also what's the average cost of a coil?

u can get a new 40K volt Accel for about 45 bucks. I got 1 for my 2200 and it made a world of difference. If u r plugs are getting fire to them the coil is ok. If not I would replace it. BJ

so i reseated the connectors on the coil just because everything is closed to go buy a new one and tested for spark got it and then seemed to start and idle fine, went to go drive it got maybe 3 houses down and it stalled yet and won't start back up no i have no idea what's going on

It may possibly be your alternator. Just throwing out a random possibillity.

not so random i'm adding it to my list of things to check.

this all started to happen after my upper rad hose cracked and had coolant leak everwhere (i had to drive home from work with it ) so it could have fried the alternator causing the problems

check all your grounds around the engine bay. once everything is good, REPLACE the coil, just reseating the plug isn't going to fix anything.

if you have a bad alternator, once the truck cuts off, you will not be able to turn the starter over because your battery will be dead, so that is not your problem.

it's the coil if you have replaced the plugs, plug wires, dist cap and rotor. and it is still not getting spark. only thing left is the coil, or a loose ground
