Starting!

aye, what a dark day it is to me...

I will turn the ignition, have the clutch pedal in, in neutral, e brake on, and it does not start! The starter works fine, as well as the electrical!

Then, my dad merely says its because I do not have my foot on the gas. So I let him have a whack at it. He started it up and had the gas on, and even though it would start at the hig idle, once the key was on the ON position, it would just shut right off again! He repeated this like 8 more times, and then it would stay started. And the worst part about it, is is was smoking! SMOKING! I did not pay all this money just to find I bought a shithole!

My dad thinks its the float in the carb... I BTW, have no clue myself. So if it be, one of you mazda riders, knows the answer!

NEXT time let the truck sit a while . you probably flooded it a bit by tryin to start it 8 times the way you say .


Spray some carb cleaner in the carb - then give it a start see if it starts . If not - wait like 10 mins then spray starting fluid down the carb . You may or may not have a fuel problem (lack there of ) Now the issue with smoke is couple things


white - head gasket
black - carb needs cleaning.
gray smoke- needs rings ( this smoke lingers after start up continualy .
Blue - i forget what that problem is maybe one the other guys can fill that in.

Blue/gray smoke usually= oil smoke from bad rings.White is from antifreeze getting in cylinders from bad head gasket.

smokes probably just from all the gas in the carb. make sure you let it sit for awhile. while your sitting around, look on your carb and make sure all your vacuum lines are connected to the carb. if there are any not connected that will be giving your the right amount of air in the carb to keep it running correctly.

Well, it was'nt exactly alot of smoke. It did give quit a bit enough of smoke to be concerned. It stopped about 3 or 4 seconds after the truck started. I could'nt exactly say what color it was...

The first few times I tried to start it, I didn't have my foot on the gas. You should'nt have to do that.

I should'nt have any problems with my engine! I just had it REBUILT! The rings, and gaskets are new!

I will give the lines a look through...Could any of the lines fit onto others? Maybe my brother screwed up the reconnetion?

Today I just tried to start it. About the 3rd time it started. 2nd time I tried, I left the ignition on and kept having it try to start the engine. Once it cranked over, and sounded like it would be fine, I let the key return, and it shut off right when the key returned...

Its a weird thing to experience... I can't figure out how to troubleshoot it!

well it's a carbureted motor. if the motor does not start, stepping on the gas helps.

the mazda pickups have an automatic choke. you engage it manually by stepping on the gas pedal to the floor ONE TIME. step on the gas pedal ONE TIME and start the truck. it'll start almost everytime.

i had to do that to my truck with the factory carb every time. cold or hot outside.


from what you've said, the smoke is just from the excess gas like everyone is saying. the motor got flooded from all the stepping of the gas.


but it's really hard for people to see what's wrong with the truck w/o actually being there. because for all we knew, it's probably just something simple and the descriptions are blowing it out of proportion. just like the description with the smoke.


from what you last described. i'd put my money on your ignition switch on the column. if the truck is cutting off when the key comes back to the ON position. there's only one thing there, the switch.


check for the 3main things you need for the motor to run. SPARK, GAS, AIR. if you have these three, your motor should be running.

YEAH I AGREE WITH MARK, MINE DID THE SAME THING, TURNED OUT IT WAS THE IGN. SWITCH, LUCKLY I HAD A FEW EXTRA ONES SITTING AROUND.

Alright, so if its the switch what 'am I looking for, and how do I fix it?

also, note alot of mazdas are famous for having a lil bit of smoke on start up its no big deal but trying to start it 8 times and pumping gas in that carb is like leaving your water hose in your pool all night long. its gonna flood
