VALVE SEALS, VALVE GUIDES & THE PISTON RINGS ALL COULD BE THE CAUSE OF YOUR SMOKING....START WITH THE VALVE SEALS THO AS THEY ARE THE MOST LIKELY CAUSE...ESP. SINCE THE HEAD SAT OUT FOR A WHILE, THEY PROBABLY DRIED OUT....

Haha, you should have seen mine when I got it. The previous owner put some sort of "stop smoke" chemical in the oil which is supposed to help but, well, lets just say I would have takin a picture but I couldn't see the camera on the hood...

Anyways, I changed the oil and it is perfectly fine now.

you can do it with out a air compressor. take some small rope and feed it into the sparkplug hole. then trun the crank to push the piston to the top and compress the rope against the valves. this is the harder way yes but if you dont have a Air compressor already or use of one its the cheapest.

I had the same problem with my '87 B2000. I thought I would just "freshen" up the head since it smoked a bit on startup. Had it rebuilt, put it all back together and it smoked WAY worse. I came to find out that by rebuilding the head, the tired piston rings couldn't keep up. So I had to tear it all the way down, hone the cylinders, and put new rings in. After that, it was perfect.
