ok so i drove her home last night. the guy said that it was a carburetor problem but my dad and i think that it is a timing problem. he said that the engine was just replaced about 500 miles ago with a new eng. when you crank it it is a little hard to crank but when she gets going she likes to back fire, sometimes through the intake sometimes through the exhaust. on the way home last night we got about 45 minutes from the guys house and pulled over, lifted the hood and the exhaust manifold was glowing. so we adusted the idle/air mixture and when we got home it wasn't glowing as bad and during the drive home it wasn't popping as bad. so either the carburetor is still running to lean, or the timing is off either in the distrubutor or belt. he gave me a haynes manual so i am going to mess with it today, but if anyone know what might be the problem i could really use some help. thanks.

Thats your ticket right there man, When my timing was off it ran horrible and did the same problem.

Get a Timing light, and should be a lil rod that will line up with 2 marks on the pulley, adjust it to those marks.

did you ever have your exhaust manifold glow? that scared the hell out of me but my old man said that it would be fine. it cranked right up this morning, but still backfired a little but not near as much. it is raining today so i will have to mess with the timing later. hopefully tomorrow night.

sounds like your on the right track, could be a timing issue, but it does sound like the carb needs adjusting too...a little lean like you said....get the timing right, then adjust the carb. also with the mani glowing red, i'd double check to see if the exhaust has been pinched & restricting the flow, or if it has a cat, or muffler, that it isn't stopped up.

i thought the exact same thing as soon as i lifted the hood, but my old man said that it was probably the timing seeing as how bad it was running at the time. it was idled too high and backfiring so...

but i am planning on installing a new exhaust anyway, this one has a leak somewhere and looks old and ratty.

heads up, if you can find one, offenhauser used to make an intake mani for those trucks that the weber or a holley would directly bolt to, no adapter needed....., don't know of anyone making a header for it tho.....

no prob man, glad to help!

here's a grain of salt for you, those offy intakes are hard to get (i don't know about this particual one), offy went out of bussiness a while back & someone bought all their castings & are only producing in small quantities when they get enough orders to make a batch......
