A running truck with a bunch of new parts? You should be set now. Now drag in confidence that you will get home!

yeah, new alternator, new battery, compressors are wired right and i put them on a toggle switch, they were wired so that as soon as you turn the ignition on they could come on, but that would drain the battery then it would have to be jumped off. so i fixed that. and i got rid of a ton of wiring. i am very happy with it now.

If you still have the old alternator fab up some brackets and run dual alts and you should all the power you need after that. lol

well i drove 2.5 hrs to houston yesterday, got to my bro-in-laws house, shut her down, ask him if he wants to go dragging, and my problem comes back. what a bitch. all night last night for new years all i could think about is wtf is my problem. take it to my homeboys house, find a few more things that need to be fixed, fix them. its still doing the same thing. so i take it to o'reilly's, where i got the alternator from in the first place. they test it, it is only putting out 9 amps. so now i have to swap it out again, but luckily it is under warranty. but now that it went out and it died many, many times i am concerned about the battery so i pulled it back out as well and going to get it checked and possibley replaced. it is under warranty too. but now my truck is stuck in houston, so i have to wait until this weekend to go get her back. what a pain in my ass.

well i went to get my alternator replaced today and the one that tested bad on the truck, but tests good on the bench. so they wouldn't make the swap. so i called the o'reilly's in my home town and told them to have one ready so that when i put this one back on and it reads bad i can swap it right there. but what i am wondering is why it is reading good on the bench and bad on the truck. any ideas? i am wondering if my truck has an external alternator regulator so i had them order one of those as well so i can see what it looks like. i know what one looks like but i don't see one on my truck. when the alternator was tested on the truck this past weekend the computer said that it had a bad alternator regulator, soooo......

any ideas?

Hmmmmmm. If you have an alternator with an intenal regulator installed, is the plastic 2 prong plug that plugs into the alternator a factory wired plug, or does it look like it was added to the wiring harness? I ask because my Haynes manual says 84 and newer had internal regulators. On my 87 if you switch the 2 wires I guessing the output will be nill.

it was a factory wired plug but the plastic fell apart and i had to put some female terminals on the wire and just plug them onto the alternator. now that you said that about the 87 i am wondering if i put the wires on the right terminals. i may switch them this weekend when i get down there to see how it works out. thanks again bro.

Update

ok, i am back and i drove her home. you won't believe what the problem was. i new it would be something stupid. i pulled the belt off and got a new belt. the old belt was so old it wouldn't get tight anymore, it was just slipping. but there was no noise or smell. i installed a new belt and my problem is solved. how screwed up is that. now there are just little things that i need to fix and she will be good.

thanks for all the help. this will definitely be something i will remember.
