I went to smog my truck and failed horribly. I exceeded the gross polluter limits on the hc and co, no was fine. I changed the plugs, o2 sensor , oil, pcv, breather, and sea foamed the engine. It only has 82,000 miles on it but had been sitting for a long time. The smog tech told me it might be the carb because the fuel isn't getting burned properly. So I might rebuild the carb and drive the truck around to get rid of some of the carbon build up. What do you guys think?

only 82k, dang & an 87 too.....

just out of curiosity, did they do a visual inspecion?

since it has been sitting, the carb may be sticking & loading up @ idle & dumping too much fuel, it either may need adjusting, or may need to take it apart & do a good cleaning & reinstall.
also you could get an aftermarket digital igniiton such as accel, msd, mallory or haltech & the extra fire from one of those ought to burn any excess fuel off & even pep up the motor too....

Yeah they did a visual inspection and passed on everything. Where's a good(cheap) place to get one of those ignitions.

the reason i asked about the visual was if they didn't you could consider a weber carb conversion & loose the stock carb that usually has issues......

this is the accel that i have

you can also get an accessory for it that allows further tuning

here is a froogle search for the msd sci-l which is a nice system

and another for the msd sci + which has a few more benefits

and the mallory hyfire 6 ezl is a nice setup similar to the accel

with any of these four, you'll have to replace your points in the dizzy @ every 10k as the extra spark will wear them down...not to big of a deal if you don't mind replacing them.....

if not, you can go with i think it's called haltech, they offer a system that can change out the points in our dizzy to an optical pickup, which would keep from having to change them out every 10k, i don't have a price or p/n, but i know carl at paeco industries in birmingham, al (205-823-7278)can tell you more about them, or the people at

you can go to the particular manufacturers sites & pull up the install & owners manuals to the accel, msd, & mallory, reason i suggest this is that
each one has different characteristics that are unique & this would help you to make up your mind which is right for you, these are only a few & none are made specifically for our trucks, but can be used on them.

hope that helps you out!

Well I was changing my plug wires today and the wire from the ignition to the distributor was completely corroded. How much would that affect anything?

I run MSD!

Blaster 5 Ignition
Blaster 2 Coil
MSD 8mm Wires

I love the way it turns over, and 0AWG to the Starter helps too.....

And my whole setup was $148.50 shipped!

Under $150 sounds good to me!

i used to work at a used car lot and ive had to get etests for like a hundred cars...take the airfilter out.leave it out (for now)..change the plugs, check cap and rotor, change the oil.(important!), check pcvvalve, when you take it in get it HOT..runn it on the freeway to get the cat nice and hot you passed nox your cat is ok..at least 20 min ..leave it runing when you are waiting to get the test done..hope this helps...i think my boss used to either retard..or advance some cars to get them to pass...the car would hardly run but it used to pass the tests mabe someone else knows whether its adv/retard? our smog laws are pretty tight here in Ontario....how bad did it fail..the numbers..

if your talking about the ecu, yeah, its an electronic ignition...duh, it doesnt' run off of free floating molecules, but it is very weak, a stronger aftermarket ignition spark will more efficiently burn the air fuel mixture in the combustion chamber, thus producing a cleaner exhaust gas....
