one more thing...in order for the truck to run the way it is, the idle must be high, and the mixture lean, which causes a lot of condensation in the engine...will this cause any long term damage running it this way?

lean=bad for an engine, this can lead to burnt pistons & valves amongst other problems.

double check the timing, pull the timing belt, make sure #1 is tdc, and the cam is set for the intake stroke, and put the belt back on. as i understand, there are two different timing belts, one just slightly longer than the other, if you have the wrong one installed, it could throw the timing off. also, if you can find someone with a old code reader (obd1), you can get them to read the trouble code that it is putting out, and would be a place to start diagnosing your problem, then if that doesn't give you a solid direction, i would look at the wiring, if it has been hacked into, chances are that the connections that were made are faulty & could be causing a problem as well.

just a few things to look at, & hopefully one of them will help you out.
it is hard to actually diagnose a problem w/o being there

need to save cash, so probably won't buy the header as well...what's the best way to block off the EGR pipes and the flange??
so i won't need the vacuum system except for the vacuum advance right?
and as far as electrical goes, just the connection for the electric choke on the weber is needed right? all the rest of the wiring that was to the old nikki i just shove out of the way?
thanks for your help!
man, this would be a nightmare without this site!

Its a nightmare with this site except we make the nightmare a little less scary. All of the above posts are accurate.Mazda 2000/2200s do wallow out the crank keyway and cause the timing to jump as Tweaker pointed out.The stock Nikki carbs are POS and clog up primary CAts causing early engine failure. The trucks are prone to blowing headgaskets on a semi regular basis. They have weak ignition systems that cause rough idle and limited performance. But their biggest weakness is the tendency to develop vacuum leaks in all that POS pollution crap which makes us all want to pull our few remaining hair follicles out.Check for vacuum leaks 1st and then fart around with all the other potentail issues. My 2 cents.BJ
