I bought a 1991 2.2 turbo motor & ECU from a 626. I am dropping it in 88 B2200. I checked out other forums to try and find the information that I am looking for. I need detailed information on how to go about this project. This truck is my daily driver, I'm hoping to make this a weekend project. Any information on possible problems I could run into would be great. My biggest concern is wiring this motor, how the injection & ecu work. Does the injection run off the distributor, or the ecu? Do I need a wiring harness for a 626 to achieve this? My other concern is the motor mounts. Do I use the motor mounts off of my stock motor, and if so...do they bolt staight onto the 626 block. From what I understand is the input/output shafts from the motor & tranny should be a match regaurdless of weither it came from an auto or manual tranny. Is this true? Info is greatly appriciated. Thanks, James

Ive never done the swap, but I can tell u from having owned both vehicles u have a number of issues to deal with.First, when u turn the front wheel drive 626 engine longitudinally in the 2200 frame,u r going to have distributer clearance issues with ur firewall.Secondly u r 2200 computer as it were is programmed for a carb application so ur going to need the computer and wiring harness out of the 626 or a fuel managementr system like Megasquirt.Im not sure about the output shaft of the 626 but I dont see how it will match uo with the tranny on a 2200 auto or otherwise, but maybe it will.Just some thoughts to get u thinking.BJ

bj is right, you'll have clearance issues with the dizzy as it is on the wrong end of the head. also as i understand it, the intake manifold is facing the wrong direction too, you'll have to cut is & flip it 180 deg, then reweld it...or come up with another solution. if you could source an imported mazda bongo 12v head, the dizzy would be on the correct end, & the intake would possibly work as well. you'll need the wiring harness out of the 626 unless your good at reading wiring schematics, and can fab up your own harness.....for simplicity & time constraints i'd say get the 626's harness. the blocks are the same on this engine as the trucks, so yes the trannys will be a direct bolt either manual or auto, but you will need the coresponding equipment for either to work (i.e clutch & flywheel, or flexplate & torque converter). by no means is this a weekend swap, well maybe a long holiday weekend, but with everything together & inplace to make it happen, it could be done.

keep us posted, take plenty of pics, so you can do a tech write up! that would be very sweeeeeeet!

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I am need to locate a wiring harness, and a long weekend. Another question, does the wiring harness need to be from a turbo car, or will an N/a car work?
nytrdr24   +1y
yeah, the harness & ecu will have to be from the turbo car.....

unless you go with a stand alone engine management system like bj said megasquirt, but then you would have to fab your own harness to suit the needs of the stand alone ecu.

I started the same project.
Didn't finish after my shop got robbed, but got some info on cardomain that might help...

or

The distributor issue is a big one, and a lot of other nagging issues. I've got a lot of spare swap parts.

dude, that was/is your black maz on cardomain....i'm sooooo jealous, that is one kleen ride, hopefully mine will turn out that good!

Hopefully you will get it done.
Nothing to be jealous of...you got a truck you can drive, I have a pile of parts taking up my garage and no desire to deal with them anymore.
It's starting to look "was" is the right word...but you never know.

haha, mine is nooooo where close to being driveable...no engine, parts every where too, the desire is there, but the time isn't because of work...as soon as i get back to a regular schedule here in a week or so i'm gonna start hitting it pretty hard, maybe (fingers crossed) i can have it running before summers over....
