I remember skiming that first thread and reading about the wet and dry compression.

Is the compression tester the same as a leak down tester? or do they make a combo unit?

A leak down tester involves filling the cylinder with air from a compressor and measuring how it leaks out or like the rate it leaks at. A compression tester just measures the pressure in the cylinders during revolutions. I think a lot of people mix the terms up, myself included. The easier one to do is a compression test. The unit looks like this:

You can get them anywhere.

I listed the truck for sale last night and edited it this morning, I just cant let it get to me. Its not for sale. Basically if i can put a bandade on it and ease up the smoking until I can get it rebuilt, then thats what I want to do. I believe thats gonna be the best thing to do.

if it's smokin that bad boss, and the no smoke didn't help, the valve seals are deffinately toast, and probably the head gasket too (hopefully it isnt' cracked).....the seals aren't that expensive, and could be swapped out in less than a days time with the right tools same goes with the head gasket.....I'd deff do a compression test first and see what you have, & that way you can make a better determination of what you have to do to "bandage" the situation...compression good= new valve seals & or head gasket, compression bad= full rebuild.

I'll probably end up doing a full rebuild. I will do some test until then. And I will post what they do. I ran it this morning and it wasnt smoking as bad hardly at all. It might just need to run to get the oil and no smoke heated up to start working. I'm not gonna stress it like I was doing last night.

NYTRDR24, do you do your own rebuilds on these motors? Would you reccomend a newbie doing one? If i carried the block and head to get the machine work done? or would you suggest somebody like myself to just pay for it?

sounds just like my truck back in the day, on startup, it would smoke like the chattanooga choo-choo!

do the compression test, and if the tranny fluid, coolant, and engine oil are clean from contaminates, it could just be the seals and or rings.....which is nice to know...

as far as me rebuilding my own, on this one, no, I don't have all the specailty tools to build the engine, nor do I have the time, so I have my engine @ the machine shop being built as they get down time to work on it(they stay busier than me, which since I don't have the engine bay ready for the engine yet, no biggie.....)

now, if you have all the tools, and a clean shop to do it with & feel confidant in your mechanical ability/skill have at it....I would recommend letting a machine shop check the block, head, crank & rods out, and do any of that sorta nature work for ya, and then do the build yourself, it will save you some $$...now if you don't feel comfortable, and don't have the tools, best bet is to let a reputable shop do it for ya, or get a rebuilt one, and just do the swap out yourself...

thanks for being honest. I have a reputable shop here in town, The owner is a good friend of mine's father. He does clean work and I could also trust him. I dont have the tools for the job and dont want to buy them just for a one time usage.

might just do the same. I will get a compression test with-in a week or so. Thanks NYTRDR24 and the other guys who replied.

I appreciate it.

just to go back and answer questionss..
question 1
maybe the driveline was pulled out and it leaked out the tailshaft and one time? maybe the filler dipstick unit came out of the tranny (i did that today) it definately leaks a little ha ha.
question2
a vacuum line COULD pull it up, but there'd prolly have to be a major problem internally for that to happen.

Ok guys, I have been driving the mazda a little lately instead of my blazer. I have noticed it will smoke on start up and making turns (when one side of the truck is lower that the other side) But on open roads, It want smoke as bad, If not any at all. I'm still gonna rebuild the entire engine. I think the valve seals are in worst shape than the rings. Still no leakage on the garage floor, But it is deffinalty the oil that is burning.

How about the ebay engine rebuild kits for these engines? and Also would you guys just replace the rings or the pistons also?

Ryan.

So today I have been driving the mazda also, I went about 2miles across town to pick some new business cards up from my partner and the truck only smoked at a stoplight or on a left turn. Then on the way back it almost didnt stop. Tonight it would only smoke at a stop sign or left turns. on straight aways it looked fine.

If it was the rings would the smoke stop and would the truck gain speed quickly or should I say normal? She has fine power and will hesitate when I turn left, right before she starts to smoke. Is this because the oil is seeping into the piston chamber and interupting fire?
