truck smokes really bad when i first start it and idles high

any suggestions i can only assume that the valve seals need to be replaced but i dont knopw why it idles high when i start it and once it worms up it doesnt

It will idle high when you start it if the choke is activated. Which it will when the truck is cold. The smoking could be a number of things, what type of smoke is it? Blue? White? What type of smell? A sweet smell?

mine does it too.....so embarrasing. to my luck theres usually a bunch of ppl walking that get caught in the ol oilscreen haha.

i think its valveseals...although i could be wrong...mine is effed, like.... i find when i shift, it blows a bunch of shit out, kinda messed up.

definitly valve seals, in my experience they all idle high when 1st started, after it warms up a lil bit u can actually hit the gas and it will idle back down! well mine does anyhow

How high does it idle when you first start? Mine would idle at about 1700 when it was first started colded but after it warmed up for a few minutes it went back down to 8-900.

no when i mean idle high it idles up to like 3 and once it worms up it gos down to like 1 and as far as teh smoke gos it just looks solid white and yes it is embarrasing so i try to parjk farther away from the stores so i dont drop a smoke bomb on anyone hahaha but i just thought the idle problem could be a sensor and i figure the smoke is the valve seals mine is fuel injected so i didnt think it would have as many of theses problems as the carburated ones but i guess i was wrong thanks guys i appreciate it

for your idle:
1. check all your vacuum hoses, make sure none are disconnected.
2. i know mine was an electronic choke, and if yours is, then check all the connections on it. they have those little tabs that the wire harness slides onto. one of mine was corroded and not giving my idle/carb any power. therfore it wasnt telling the idle to go down once it was warmed up. once i cleaned that up it working great again.

I had a simalar idle problem that I just resolved. Check the back of your alternator for a small wire that clips into it. If you are standing in front of your truck, on the back of the alt. it should plug into the kind of lower right hand side. If there isn't one there see if you can see where it should plug in. That was my problem and that is the wire that powers a part in the choke. When it wasn't plugged in mine would idle up to about 3,000 and sometimes could reach even 3,500.

When you blip the gas just after starting it does the rpm drop down? What does it drop to?

If it does drop down then that means its probably your choke cause thats what would be holding it up so high.

Mine will start out at about 2000rpm then when its warmed up and on choke it sits at 4000 till i hit the pedal then it drops to 900-1000 rpm don't bother me i get to get into a warm truck lol.

Well this might b bad info for you. Your problem sounds EXACTLY like mine. It was doing it and then blew the head. So now has new head with brand new valve seals in it and it is still doing it the same as before. I would advise checking the compressing on ea cylender. Mine is blow by on the #4 cylender! So it might need a rebuild not just valve seals. So check your compression before you go by any parts.
