I am getting grease/oil on my drivers side rear wheel. I'm pretty sure the axle seal is going bad. Are they difficult to replace? Whats involved? Never had to do one before and not sure how difficult it is to do. It they aren't too bad I might as well replace them both while I'm back there. What about the axle shims? What does it take to set the preload and make sure everything is good when its back together?

are you sure it isn't the wheel cylinder?

as far as the seals, you'll have to pull the axle shafts to replace the seals, it can be a pita, you'll need an axle puller, autozone rents them. while your there, might as well replace the bearings.....on the preload, i don't know if you have to mess with that unless you change the ring & pinion......i could be wrong on that part tho...

oldskewlkool... I'll get that for you this afternoon. How much do they cost per side?

I plan on replacing the seals and the bearings while I have it all apart. Don't the bearings have to be pressed on?

Then I will run synthetic oil in the rear end. I have synthetic oil for the transmission, but havn't put it in yet. What weight goes in the rear end?

Double check make sure its not your wheel cylinders. I thought my rear end went out, turns out I had a bad u joint and wheel cylinders

How do you check the wheel cylinders?

Im running 75-90 synthetic in my rear.No leaks or problems so far.BJ

Bump.Forgot the other part of ur question.Take the rear wheels off.If the area around the rear wheel cylinders is wet looking, they are probably bad.Rear axle seals leak behind the brake backing plate and look greasy rather than wet.BJ
