You actually don't want it as close to the balljoint as possible. That will likely limit your lift. I have a formula for figuring out where to put your shock based on the length of your arm from pivot to pivot, the amount of lift you want, and the travel of the shock. I use this to mount the shocks every time, and I mount them vertically.

I run Bilsteins and nothing else.

wow seth, a formula? i'm impressed! i just use the ol' one-eye guess and check method lol

Or you could be a rebel/nut job/lazy and run no shocks like I did for awhile... just make sure you are:
a-Not prone to motion sickness
b-EVERYTHING is secured
c-Drive carefully and avoid as many potholes, railroad tracks, man hole covers, etc... this takes you back to B... make sure EVERYTHING is bolted, strapped, welded, etc.

I almost lost my fuel cell because of it and the ride was TERRIBLE. If in doubt, ask someone to help you that's done it before.

Yeah I actually use a formula. Lol. It works a lot better than measuring a hundred times. You just calculate everything, measure once, and make your mounts there. I will try to remember to write it down and bring it home. Its ont he wall at the shop.

well, ya can't lose it when its on the wall. it'd be nice to see this formula if you wouldn't mind sharing

Sorry I keep forgetting. I even looked at it today when I wrote down a phone number.. I'll leave a note on my desk right now for tomorrow.
