i got a pretty trick little secret i'll let u guys now that i think is way better then the rivet idea, if u hold a penny behind the sheetmetal and fill the hole with weld the weld will not stick to the penny but will stick to the sheetmetal instead, learned this from a body shop many years ago, i can't let out all my secrets though,lol j/j

I know this is old, but Im going to start welding up my fenders (emblem holes and antenna) and my passanger side door. I can handle the door handles, key locks, and antenna hole. The emblem holes look like they are going to me a little more tricky. I dont plan on making little tiny fillers for them.

What I planned to do, simular to the penny idea, is get a small piece of copper tubing from the hardware store and hammering it flat. Then put that behind the holes and spot weld them up. I will probably just tape it up back there so I dont have to hold it. I have .027 wire so I should be good there.

Anyone see anything wrong with this plan?

Nope I'm a member of a Auto body board and has read lots of post were peeps do the same thing your talking about. but I would not tape it just get a peace long enough for you to hold

I got a 8" piece and hammered about half of it flat. Then bent half of the flat part over and hammered that flat against the rest of the flat. Then put a woodend handle off of an old rake in the other end and clamped it on. It worked great last night. I did the passenger side emblem holes and started welding up the body line in the rear.

Its raining out now so I will have to finish it tomorrow.

Auto body shope use copper because it cannot be welded on and is a good material for heat absorption! If you have small pin-like holes, turn the setting down on your welder. If its like shaving the antenna hole, take a stud, like the one you would use for pulling dents, and weld it to a peice of quarter-sized sheetmetal. Hold the stud and weld that metal to the fender. Perfect patching!

i tried this technique after i saw it on here, melted through the penny, and right thru the copper chunk i used too, <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":?" title="Confused" /><!-- s:? --> <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_confused.gif" alt=":?" title="Confused" />
