if you decide not to remove it, i've heard a tip that you pull the seal out a lil and cram string in under it. this holds it out from the body so the paint gets under it and you end up with a finish like you had removed it. And with a good quality single stage you don't need to clear, but color choices are very limited. I wouldn't recomend any metalic

Thanks man, I had a little play yesterday with the seal and that looks like it will work really well, just the kind of helpful info I was looking for.

Well I got it painted on the weekend, I haven't got around to doing any polishing yet but here's what it kinda looks like now (pics are from my phone)

The color is from a Toyota, it came out fairly good and turns heads but unfortunately I had a issue with the Bondo I used, I filled some small dents around the body and it wasn't till I got the clear on but the gold reacted to it, looks like it has circular wet spots on some panels about 2" round
I've had some people say that it's barely noticeable but of course my eyes are drawn to them whenever I see it.
Guess I'll have to do a repaint in the next Christmas holidays.

Looks great man! Guess you dropped the two tone idea lol. I had the same bodo issue your talking about but for me it was where I sanded through the primer the transition between the bare metal and the primer made the funny round marks.

Yeah I decided to go monotone after I saw 2 trucks the exact same way I was going to do mine in one week.
The color looks really good in person and I've even had some people comment on it as I'm sitting at the lights.
Luckily enough I have about 1/4 of a gal left so I have plenty for touch-ups or to respray the panel later on if needed.
Thinking about painting the rocker cover to match soon too.
This time I'll make sure it's really clean and has a good primer level.
Thanks again for the help

that color looks pretty sharp on it, definitely not the norm of color choice for our trucks

gold can be a hard color to blend and match... it looks like the door is different from the rest...
the color is nice tho. def not the norm!

Yeah I noticed the door too, from side on it's hardly noticable, but from some angles it shows up more.
I was getting blinded by the paint as I was doing it so it looked really mint, once I got it home again I was able to walk around it in the shade and noticed my mistakes.

Luckily enough I had a friend get the paint on his works account so I got a big discount and didn't have to pay tax, all up it would've cost me about $300 of your American dollars, a day off work for prep and the works keys so I could use the compressor there.
I think later on next year I'll probably redo that whole side, there's a few things I'm not too happy about but since I hadn't really done much painting before it was mostly a learning exercise.
