IMO if you want that look of the early models get one. On the other hand if you want a diffenent front end and "Nothing is out of the question with this build BTW" . Get this front end.

I'm not feelin it, looks like a old escort front end.

thats exactly what i was thinking. i think the best looking front end is the regular 86-93 style.

Thanks for the input.

If I wanted to start another build on a Courier or something I'd do that, but what I'm looking for are front end/grille options for my 92. I'm WAY too far into the build/swap to decide I'm changing platforms entirely now. It's a 100% frame-off build that is just about ready to have the cab back on the frame. It doesn't sound like a much, but it's been too much work to abandon now.

I figured a forum like this would be the last place where everyone is humping at the "just go buy an older one" leg. No desire to be adventurous and have something that the guy on the next forum can just run to the farm down the road and buy?

I guess the only thing that is out of the question with this build is changing platforms entirely now.

Oh, and the S-10 conversion... definitely not happening. I chose to build a Mazda so I wasn't just another guy building an S-10.

This whole idea came up because I'm swapping my core support because it's not in the shape I want it to be in. I figured since I'll have it out anyway, maybe I can get away with something a little different. I'll weigh my options and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I think what you are running up against here is a great design that needs little to look awesome. I think that is why most that are on this site are willing to put up with such an amiemic platform. I mean 87 hp just isn't too exciting. Building a Mazda is already different enough. Believe me, I thought I could improve the front, but I have had every conventional conversion on my truck and always come back to the stock front end. Also, to me this body doesn't lend itself to the "rat rod"/ traditional look. Think out of the box and do something really original. The ex-cab in the post above looks great but if I squit my eyes just right I see it with glossy paint, a custom interior and some bitchin' wheels. I think the older trucks can pull off the primer rat look, just not the 86 to 93.

I'm with you, ugly.

But the 73 needs the cab lenghtened through the doors. Add about 10" and the proportions look alright. Not to mention you could actually drive it!

Put a 1980s VW Rabbit pickup front clip on it and unibody it.

i can see it stretched. dunno about 10" tho. we've got a 34 ford (i know way different) truck in the shop that the cab n doors were stretched i think 4" and that made a HUGE difference.
