6x9s in door panels?

I was thinking, since I've got my system all hooked up now, that my 6x9 boxes are very bulky and take up a ton of room. I was going through pics from Scrape by the Lake that I took over the summer, and found this Mazda with some 6x9s in the door panels, and they don't have a pod or a box or anything.

Looks like they were basically just screwed into the door panels, but I have a feeling the door itself has to be cut to let a speaker fit. It's a very similar fitment to the door speakers in my Contour, which screwed right into the metal on the door. Think I would be able to do this with mine? Has anyone else done it? I really like the idea and it'll gain me some space, and look better.

Take a look and let me know your thoughts. btw,I love the paintjob on this truck.

those look to be 5.25s or 6.5s and they would just screw right onto the panel and into the door, depending on placement you may or maynot need to cut your door. -bf

yeah they def. look like a set of 6.5" speakers tops, take you door panel off so you can see where the best place to mount it would be, most likely towards the front because if i remember right, the front of the window is the shortest area of it and would be the best place to mount and have the least worry about the window hitting the speaker. it may be possible but most likely not without cutting the door, i had to cut my doors to fit two sets of 6.5" speakers and had to build out with fiberglass and it was still close, but my speakers were pretty deep

good luck

Actually would not be a bad idea for your situation. I know most do a round speaker in the door, but a 6x9 would not look bad provided you have the grills on. As far as the sheet metal, you will probably have to do some trimming.

i am not a big fan of speakers in the door panels. personally i would put them in the kick panels. but that is just me.

that paint job on that truck is sick!

like maztang was sayin, dont let my pic turn you away from 6.5s, they look huge on my panel, but when they are n the dont look near as big.
and as immortal said, iv never seen anything but round speakers in dors but i think if you put some nice grills on them it would look nice. -bf

oh and just incase you were wondering, no that i look at them they are kicker speakers, and id lay money on them being 6.5s

that's weird guys....I look at them,and they look like a 4x6 or a 6x9 in my eyes...maybe it's just the angle...I dunno.

I was planning to replace my 6x9s with some 6.5s in door pods, but I think if I can make the 6x9s work in the door panels,I probably will.

How do you guys run your wiring for your door speakers?

eh,the more I look at it,they do look more round than oval...

...I don't see why I couldn't get 6x9s to work. Just depends on the magnet depth. If it ever warms up here,I'll try screwing around with the speakers.
