96 and newer of any vehicle had to be OBD2 compliant, these vehicles have alot more sensors than 94 and older. If it were 98 and newer, id run standalone ecu. Obd 2 for example have up to 4 oxygen sensors, one infront of the cat and one behind the cat to monitor cat performance. Most obd 2 cars i have worked on have all gauges controlled by the ecu, speedo, temp, tach all come from the ecu. Egr valve is electronically controlled by the ecu, along with a sensor to monitor its performance. If anything goes wrong it goes into limp mode and you get crappy performance.
