I leave the feeler gauge in place as I tighten the LOCKNUT.....when tightening the locknut you are not putting any more pressure on the feeler gauge IF you hold the screwdriver, and therefore the adjusting screw, in place while turning/tightening the locknut......if anything, your pulling the adjusting screw away from the feeler gauge as you tighten it. I then remove the gauge and see if it slips in with a slight amount of resistance......if it slips right in kinda loose, I check the gap with a .001" larger feeler gauge to see if it will slip in, if it does, I redo the lash setting again, if the larger won't slip in, I leave it be.
I also set them at .007" to .009"....most of the time I do .009" on both intake and exhaust and it's quiet as a mouse.
I also try to do this with the engine warmed up.......this is a good winter project also, I don't do it in the summer!

Yeah, slamson, I read in Chilton's to do it warm.

Pont, my truck is a stock B2000. Forgot to mention that.

Earl, that's a good idea. I'll have to remember that.

I set all of mine to .008" and magically it's quiet as a ... Mazda.

Why is it if everyone has better results with a smaller clearance, the spec calls for something else?

I guess those Japs wanted it to sound like it was tap dancing down the road or something. I'm sure as the tip of the adjusting screw wears a flat spot on it, it will give a different or louder tapping sound, compared to a new adjuster's tip, so that may have something to do with it.......at .012" an all new part's situation may be quieter than our worn parts are.

Yeah, didn't think about that. I'll bet you're right on that one.
