just wondering if anyone knows the most common reason for this?

it is a head that I got off of another truck.

cleaned it all up took the valves out everything looked good, new valve seals all new gaskets put it on a truck I had that was in need of a head.

got everything back together filled the oil, filled the rad and was just about to give it a try, checked the oil one last time before turning it over and when I pulled the dip stick out coolant poured out of the dip stick tube

little to say I did not turn the key after seeing that

any ideas as to what the problem might be?

thanks,

did you use a new head gasket? what manufacture/brand did you use?
tpaulh   +1y
Yes new head gasket

the brand is FEL-PRO got the whole upper set off Ebay

will the heads crack somewhere to allow water/oil to mix? I'm not sure that the head was good, it looked ok and was not warped at all but it came off a friends parts truck

did u scrape all the old gasket off? sometimes even the smallest piece will make it leak. its a long shot but if its not that then the head could be cracked. youd proly c it tho or your block could be cracked/warped if so it would leak with any head. and that would suck.
good luck. hope its somthin small

yeah cleaned it real good.

does the the housing for the distributor/thermostat every crack and would that allow water/oil to mix?

or can the heads crack but not be warped? the head looked real clean when I pulled it off the other truck.

the thermostat wouldnt let coolant in the block nor would the dizzy i dont think (correct if im wrong) but i also would think if it was cracked it would be warped too but maybe not. i would clean the head real good witch u have and c if u can see a crack anywhere. they can be really hard to see. if the old head on that motor got warped or cracked then check your block too. other than that i cant think of any other reasons for coolant in the oil b4 even turned on. thats crazy. anyone else got some ideas. the more bs out there the better!

yeah never even turned it over and we are talking a lot of water it was fountainning out of the dip stick tube.

Thanks for the help guys I will let everyone know what I find

u can do a radiator pressure check and a compression check i think that would help u figure it out

So without ever starting it, coolant flowed out the dipstick hole??? Wow. Amazing since the system wasn't under any pressure at that time, and even a crack would seal back most fluids if not under pressure.

Flog me for asking: but ANY CHANCE someone was tired and added coolant to the oil fill instead of through the radiator cap? That's the ONLY thing I can think of that would cause that situation.

i cant even think of any possible coolant hose that could have been mistaken for an oil hose. really i cant think of any oil hoses in the truck period. there might be one but i not that i no of. it would have to be metal. cusser may be on to somthin. or maybe it was standing in the bottom of the oil pan from what ever experience you had with the old head and never got flushed. might have just drained in there while sittn assuming that you blew a head gasket or cracked a head b4 replacing it. did you change the oil or drain the coolant when you replaced your head?
