Westacles I'm thinking a burnt alternator from the reverse polarity of the battery posts. If you have a volt meter test the battery for sufficient voltage (12 volts DC) with the engine off. Then restart the engine and check the battery voltage again when it idles it should at least be two volts more than the previous battery engine off test.

I ahd this problem. turned out it was the thing on the back of the ignition switch. it was that little white thing the actual key switch plugs into. unfortunately for me i found this out after I had done bought a toggle switch and push button and had straight wired it. personally i like the push to start though. the key to it is the togglre switch. will take pics later.
