The first issue is that I would not put that money into rebuilding a head, there is a seller on ebay who sells 100% new heads complete for $350-ish and I have one - it is great.

They have re-casted the head with more metal and it will not suffer from 20+ years of metal fatigue.

Re-ring the block and if the bearings look good just leave them alone - if you do the bearings, you always run the risk of them not working out - if they are happy, they are happy.

Another huge benefit is that if you buy the mechanical version, you do away with the troublesome hydraulic lifters.

I paid about $300 to get my cylinder head machined/re-done locally.

True, but for only a little more you are getting a NEW casting and part of the problem is that the original head is old, so it can crack and warp more easily.

Brand new is the way to go, they make them for a lot of these old engines, F2, G6, 22R etc. and the reason is that while the block is iron and not as subject to failure, the head is aluminum and gets fatigued and what not.

I wouldn't buy any new parts until you get the head off, there is a very good possibility that the head is warped or cracked.
