Owner says he had it overloaded with lumber, engine overheated collapsing the springs and rings.
How involved is this repair? Any residual damage to look for after overheating like this?

The only reason I am even remotely interested is the body is clean/original and the interior is close to mint.
From what little I can tell, it's a middle aged gentleman that's maintained the truck.

I know each vehicle engine design can have its own intricacies, I've never done work on these trucks but my assumption would be it's fairly straight forward?

Well I would probably say the cheapest route is to get a good used motor, you can use a carb'd motor if that's all you can find, no real difference there.

You could also buy a rebuilt motor for around $1200 or rebuild the one you have.

If it overheated due to a load, then look at the cooling system, particularly the rad and fan.

Replace radiator (it's old) with 2-row model originally designated for automatic transmission B2200 trucks, works great in Arizona heat.

I'd do rings/pistons and re-do the cylinder head too. And maybe new fan clutch, new bypass hoses, etc.

I sourced the gaskets/materials from Napa, I like their quality. Spoke with one local machine shop, quoted $350.
So probably about $700 like Cusser's tech write up on the low end if I am lucky.

Napa does have a complete head assembly (Moore) ready to go for $695, so that's a possibility if existing is too far damaged.

By the way this is an automatic, so would it have the 2 row? I know it all needs addressing anyway as something failed or was pushed beyond limits when stressed to cause this issue in the first place.

Yes, then: likely the 2-row. You can tell by looking. But if it was the original radiator, extremely likely that it has lost significant cooling capacity over the decades.

8-springs
head cylinder gasket kit
ring set
timing belt kit

Sound about right to start?

I think I'd do the valve stem seals while I had the head off.

Want to swap out the water pump while it's convenient?

Also: replace the two hard-to-access bypass hoses on the right side of the engine, just because it's convenient, and if they blow, you're in trouble.

Stem seals are included in kit from Napa I think, machinist figured that in on his pricing. But if not, the premium Fel-pro is $17.69

Good idea about the pump and hoses.

Springs-$39.92
Ring set-$79.99
Timing belt w/water pump-$183.44
gasket kit-$99
Total
$421.58 + tax

I bought NPR pisons and rings for not much more than that $79.99 from an Ebay retailer in California.

Timing belt/water pump for that price better include all new idlers too.

It does, entire kit. I've always found Napa to be high quality and reasonable on MOST vehicles.
