picked up a 92 2200 which i was going to put onto the road today when i noticed a bit of white smoke while i was warming it up so i shut it off and checked the coolant which is topped right up, i then checked the oil and couldnt notice anything bad on the dip stick still rather tan and clear but when i pulled the oil cap it had the blown head white slime but not alot only in the very center of the cap , i hoooked a pressure tester up to the rad and put 15psi into the sooling system and it did lose pressure so what im asking is what is the chance the block cracked and what is the chance that i just have a bad head gasket, im fine doing a head gasket but if its likey i cracked the block im going to hold off on the whole thing.

white smoke is normal in the winter and as long as it isn't gray or blue and as long as it doesn't linger way too long. what you are seeing on the oil cap is a little bit of moisture on the underside of the valve cover. again normal in the winter.

Yes, I agree that I have seen the white slime in the cap on so many cars and this can be normal.

If you are losing pressure, look for where the leak is coming from - you can try a bit higher pressure like 17-20, if it is going to blow that will help bring it on, if something blows at 20psi then it was going to blow soon anyway (remember, newer cars and aftermarket, high pressure caps are often 16-19psi) one thing is that if you leave pressure in the cooling system long enough and the head gasket is leaking into a cylinder (or 2,3,4) it'll cause coolant to be pumped into the cylinder(s) and you'll likely get a telltale sign which is a misfire upon a subsequent startup, which will go away after you rev it a bit.

Beware that coolant in your crankcase will cause the bearings to fail. You can also pressurize the cylinders to see if the head gasket leaks and that would be one of my next tests.

You can also pressure test the cooling system dry, and use soapy water to spot the leak (if it is external)

White vapors in winter at first few minutes can just be condensed water from the exhaust, until the exhaust systems warms up enough.

Also, the "pudding" in the oil cap can be from condensed water in the oil, which may not be getting hot enough for long enough to boil out the moisture. Again: common in winter for engines driven just short times/distances.

The problem is that the smoke didn't I away. I'm going to run it again tomorrow and see from there.

I'm going to do an oil change aswell to be safe and if third coolant in the oil then I'll do a head job I guess

As I said, if the cooling system is leaking, just find out where it's going to.

When does this white smoke appear, is it right away, or after a minute or so. I noticed in the other thread that you have an EFI truck. I had a problem on my 93 EFI B2200 where it would start fine, no smoke, run smooth, but after 2 minutes or so, it would start making white smoke, and would get worse, then it would drop one cylinder at idle and smoking like crazy. I thought it was the head gasket, but it turned out my intake manifold gasket was leaking between the coolant passage and one cylinder. When my cooling system pressured up from heat expansion, it would start spraying coolant into the intake port of one cylinder (#2 I think).

When it first happened, you could not see anything behind me while driving, idled like crap, but seemed to run ok under high throttle and smoke less (high throttle=less vaccume, and less coolant being sucked in). Next day, I was expecting to find a cylinder full of coolant, coolant in the oil, etc... but it started right up, no smoke, and ran perfect, for 2 minutes.

it runs great and smokes a bit on start up and at idle and open throttle like if i was to rev it theres smoke. ill do the intake gaskets at the same time so it will solve that if it is what causing it. i thinkim going to do the head anyways just to be safe.
