I looked this item up in my mazda factory manual. It say that the item is a Resonance Chamber and the function is "Improves mid-range torque characteristics". I am sure that it can be removed, but if you think about it, they spent money designing and manufacturing this "box" it must give some h.p. gains or they wouldn't put it on there.

Well I was able to notice a slight power difference when I changed out my factory parts... Just cause they (mazda) put it on the engine doesn't necessarily mean its gonna do anything to help performance, it could be more for helping with emissions controls. And if you are trying to clean up the engine bay and de clutter the motor, this box can most definitely be removed...
