No,shouldn't be able to suck air through the distributor vacuum advance. The best way to check is to set up the timing light, rev the engine, and see if the timing is advancing. If that doesn't advance it, try a hand vacuum on the vacuum can as you increase the rpm, in case the carb isn't pulling vacuum.

Is the distributor can vacuum hose attached to the correct port on the carb?

yes sir. followed all instructions, double checked, everythings hooked up right, it seemed to pull vacume when i put my finger over it and reved it. i noticed the advance unit was kind of hard to move, my other one moved freely when i moved it with my hand. so i might swap them. and my timing is weird. it was at the mark past the btdc mark on the timing cover. i moved it one tooth back and it was at 10 degrees btdc. so i moved it back. and my dizzie wants to be either all the way forword or all the way back word. i moved it back and forth a tooth. even when i line the marks up directly, the dizzy doesnt wanna be in the middle. would this be because of my advance unit? or would it not even be a big deal?

its almost gotta be the timing or a malfunction in the dizzy cause theres no leaks anywhere. i used my sealant, took my time, (took me 3 hours) id stop and double check my work through every step cause i didnt want any leaks or mishaps. i probly need to pull my plugs and re gap and clean them. i cleaned them once a month with my oem carb cause how rich it was and all the oil i burnt. but i neglected to lately cause of the cold.

im going to go ahead and assume that i need to either replace my advance unit, or get it freed somhow cause i dont think it was moving very easily last night when i looked at it. could be the cause of my issues. i might just replace the hole dizzy. ill update if this helps. if it does then my idol shouldnt drop below its set rpm after reving. (almost like the idle doesnt catch the motor as its falling and almost dies.)

welp. i went home and looked at my advance unit, it works. tinkered around and cussed 4 awhile and i finaly got the dizzy to be in the middle instead of one way or the other, got rid of the light throttle sputters ect, but now when i pull my vac advance and suck on it it makes the rpms drop. if i take the bolt out and move the dizzy back, the advance will bring the rpms up. but without the advance, the dizzy likes the middle the best, wtf. think ima leave it alone 4 awhile atleast it aint doin what it was doin.

When you reset the distributor did you make sure the timing was at Top Dead Center BEFORE you started?

yea man. with the cam lined up perfectly, the crank gear will either set 1 degree retarded or 10 degrees advanced on the belt from tooth to tooth. so i left it one degree retarded cause it dont like to be ten degrees btdc no matter where the dizzy is. my dizzy likes to be in the middle without vacume advance. but when the timing advance kicks in then the rpms drop. so i have the dizzy turned all the way back and it advances fine. tried the next tooth in either direction, no bueno. and it seems like i dont have much more power if any than with the stock carb. im runnin a 38 and my exhaust is good and has enough flow. mind u the sputters and bucking issues are gone. now it seems like im lacking maybe jsut a little power, and i have to have the dizzy all the way back for the vacume advance to do anything noticable. otherwise just drops rpms. thanx for the help fellers we gettin somwheres
