Hi Guys,

Yes, the head came a couple of days ago. I got one with hydraulic lifters. I started pulling the old head today and should have it back together tomorrow if nothing goes wrong. Then it's back to the e-check station.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner - got involved with painting a house. Hope you all had a good Easter.

Well, I didn't get it together today. You know those two little sleeves that align the block and head? They are jammed in the old head and I can't get them out. I tried NAPA and Pep Boys today but naturally they don't carry them. I guess I will make a run to Mazda tomorrow so they can tell me they are special order parts.

Edit: I looked around the garage and found some tubing of the right diameter, so I cut some new locating sleeves. No need to bother Mazda.

Edit2: Here's a pic of the old head.

There is no rest for the wicked.

I put the new head on. Started the engine. Drove it around the block to warm it up and pump up the lifters. When I got back I noticed it was leaking oil at the rear of the head. Whoops - guess who didn't think to put the oil seal on the back end of the cam shaft.

Take the head off again, install a seal, put it back together and start it up. Now it is making a distinct knocking sound. Drove it around the block to see if maybe a lifter needed to pump up. No improvement. Pretty bad knock. Take the head off again. Inspect head and pistons carefully for interference - everything looks good. Slowly turn cam shaft by hand and feel a distinct notch/catch at one point. Finally trace it to a hydraulic lifter that is totally flat - about 0.060" slop. Remove rocker and pull lifter out. Can't blow air through oil passage in lifter. Run some 0.020 safety wire through passage and get a chunk of what looks like gasket compound out. Put it all back together and start the engine. Now it is running well.

I think that was the fourth time I pulled the head. It was not my goal, but I seem to be getting good at it. Sigh.

I put the dwell meter on it and adjusted idle mixture to mid forties. Went for a drive and now the dwell is between 20 and 80 in almost any driving condition. I guess that's good. Also had a vacuum gauge teed in to the EGR line and it shows a good vacuum to the EGR much of the time while driving.

I will try to do an e-check tomorrow.

I still wanna know if that mamoo passed e-test.BJ

YAHOO!!!

Yes, it passed with flying colors. NOX went from around 1500 to 300.

I used a 2.0 gasket. I noticed that the gasket has one passage with a very small opening - is that the restrictor?

So are you saying I should get a 2.2 gasket and add the restrictor to the block? Or just leave the 2.0 gasket?
