no you prolly won't ever have problems, other than black soot shit coming out from where it doesn't seal.

This is the seventh B i've owned and I never had one with paper/fibrous exhaust gaskets, just the steel heat shield thing. just a thought, but wouldn't you need a paper gasket on either side of the heat shield for it to seal properly?

when I pulled my engine out (never had touched it before & I bought the truck new in 93), it had the ones like in max-od's pic inbetween the heatshield & the head surface, but inbetween the h-shield & the stock manifold, it was just a thick coat of permatex.....as you said jest, you'd think that they would be on either side of the heat shield...another fine mystery from mazda!!

Max-od, you can get the gasket(s) from mazda or the one from pacesetter will work alright with the stock manifold, and you can get it from the place I posted above for like $8 or something...if all else fails, ask the parts house for a roll of gasket material & specify that you are gonna use if for the mani gasket & they'll give you what you need to make one.

ya that sounds like my best bet, i will probably have a gasket inside and outside of the heat shield just tp be safe.

i just got my exhaust gasket material from jegs and made up some gaskets . here a pic of the heat shield , you can see how bad it was leaking . but now i think i have another problem. it sounds like i have a valve slapping around in the 4th cyl.
