so i just finished with my daily dose of 'wtf's and 'you've got to be kidding me's, i ran the timing light and it was WAAAAAAAAAAAY off adjusted the distributor as far as i could and its still out of range advanced i think (towards the driver side) took the timing belt cover off and everything seems fine, no bad wear on the belt or pulleys, could it still be shot? just seems like it jumped time outta no where, i hate the fact that ive been chasing the problem around the truck and seem to find stuff thats broken or worn out but i cant seem to fix the original problem....ITS JUST SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY TAUNTING ME!

p.s. im located in cape coral FL about a 9 hour drive south of the FLA/GA line

There are some things you can try:

1. If whether or not the crank and camshafts are out of time maybe like a tooth or something. You will have to retime it to fix that.

2. Check to make sure your dist. is working properly. Your advance should work and the vacuum line should be connected when timing the dist. 6 degrees BTDC for ignition timing at idle!

want to sell the truck?
notkwik (john)   +1y
no, i dont think im gonna sell the truck because A) ive got too many busted knuckles into it for me to not be able to enjoy it and B) by the time i DO get it running it'll be a brand new truck

figured out the distributor issue and its now back in time, still stalling and now it seems worse, i might have to take it to a real mechanic so he can charge me a couple grand to reconnect a vaccum line that i missed or something stupid like that

something you need to check is the woodriff key on the lower timing gear on the crank it may have cut a groove in your crank or the bolt backed out one if either loctite the piss out of the threads and you will be fine......my last truck jumped over 20 degreese out and it ran the same as you describe i bet it is in the lower gear (pull the lower belt pulleys off 6x 10mm and one 22mm or 27mm depending on year motor and it should come off wit a little persuasion

check the two vacuume lines under the intake manifold they like to hide
