Unknown Engine Noise

Ok, so here is the time when I try to describe an engine noise and make myself feel like an idiot, but here goes...

It sounds like a clicking/clanking noise coming from the engine bay. It doesn't do it nearly at all when it's cold, and as it gets warmer it gets worse. Also, the harder I push the gas, the louder the noise gets (even if the truck doesn't accelerate, like when in 5th gear and going up hill) and if I keep the RPM's up I don't hear it at all.

I didn't notice the noise as bad just after I finished my head reassembly, but it seems to be getting worse now. That could just be my imagination, though.

My first thought is a loose cam chain, but it doesn't really make sense that it wouldn't be as noticeable if it's cold if it was the cam chain.

I think the key indicator here is pressing the gas (while in 5th gear) makes the noise a lot more noticeable.

Do you guys have any ideas?

is mabe a cat converter...i would think it would be more under the floor

or possibly a timing chain guide???

It does sound like it's coming from under the floor, but I assumed that was just because that was the straightest line from the noise, assuming it was coming from under the hood.

Would that demonstrate my symptoms? I'm assuming the fix is a replacement? Can it just be removed?

you can remove the cat i dont know what your state laws are tho...when the truck is warmmed up climb underneath it and kick the exhaust pipe with your foot see if you can hear it clanking around inside

Ehm, you do know these engines have hydraulic lifters, right? They are notorious for the ticking noise. It describes everything your encountering when driving.

Although, it is'nt supposed to be a clank noise as well. Maybe I did'nt understand your explanation good enough?

BTW, press the gas slowly through the RPM ranges and note when it is most prominent. You can narrow it down to being caused by a harmonic vibration.

i remember when my timing guide broke in my nissan hb... the clanking was only during down shifting and at mid and higher rpm range, also when under a load like going up a hill...... hope you get the problem figured out...
