Completley bolted back together and it is locked again. GRRRR So much for an alignment problem. Are there any other 2200 series engines? Something that may not be compatible with our trucks? The blocks, crank ends, bolt holes all appear to be exact. I am really stumped guys.

Your converter is not seated all the way, You will want to to the following:
Fill the converter with fluid, slide the converter on the transmission shaft, begin to spin the converter clockwise while putting light pressure on the converter. it should slide into a second position.
Sounds to me like its not seating correctly and you are pressing on the flexplate (flywheel)

PS. Just FYI, this could have damaged your pump in the trans if you pushed it and it wasn't seated properly, and/or it could have messed up your flexplate.

Just a thought - is this the engine that came out of this truck or is this an engine from another truck (ie one with a manual trans?) If it is the original engine, then MazdaTweaker and ChinkyChris probably have your solution.

If the engine is from a manual trans truck, and if the crankshaft is like most small block Chevys, then try your problem may be that there is a busing in the end of the crankshaft for the manual trans input shaft to spin against (ie when the engine is running, the clutch is in and the trans input shaft is not turning). For automatics this does not apply. The converter and the flexplate are always turning together. The know on the engine side of the converter may not be seating in the end of the crank shaft because of the bushing. Again this is only if you have a different engine.

Thanks for the replies guys!
I am going to have another go at it when the turkey wears off.
Immortal, I did remove the bushing from the crank.

I'm interested to see if you got this going...Did ya?
if not, can you post up a pic of the converter and flexplate (flywheel)?

I know it sounds dumb and please don't take offence, make sure you have a flywheel for a manual and a flexplate for a auto. there is a big difference

Just trying to help. If you need anything let me know

I am thinking that you are stacking the pump with the converter. The converter is not in all the way you need to spin while lifting a bit to get it to drop into the pump, it will seem like its there and still need to go another 1/2 or so. I know sbc trans you push and spin untill it drops in 2 times it has to go threw the seal then pump then the 2 tabs meet up on the pump. I would free up the converter and see if when you spin it and push it drops in1

OK I pulled the motor apart enough to get to the converter. Pulled it and filled the fluid, turned it for about 2 minutes (literally) to make sure it was seated. According to the manual I should have 2.13" of distance from across the housing face with a straight edge to the torque converter mounting holes. I only mesured just shy of 2" but I thought I would give it a shot anyway. So bolted it back up and mated the moter and trans together and IT IS NOW FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks so much for all the help guys. Now I can move on to the next delima.
