Does anyone know how the gaps should line up when installing new piston rings. I have been doing some reading and now am unsure if I lined them up correctly during installation.

Should I have done it like this? I was just concerned about lining up the top ring gap with the oil ring upper rail gap and the second ring gap with the oil ring lower rail gap. Right now I have the gaps on opposite sides of the thrust direction and have read that you should never put the gaps there.

The diagram came from the Haynes repair manual for mazda pickup.

Does this look correct?

As for the expander, I thought that it needed to be lined up there and I used the 120 rule for the rest of the rings which would bring the bottom oil rail in line with the top ring. So should I move my expander gap more towards the top rail gap? This is my first engine rebuild and I think I'm just getting over paranoid. I took the pistons out like three times thinking I had put somthing in backwards

you should be fine as long as you stagger them all the 120 rule works fine. slow down think and take your time man, you keep taking them pistons out your new engine will be worn out already, lol. i remeber i was nervous on my first engine as well, but when it fires up theres nothing better.

Thanks guys for all the help. I'll get some pics up when I'm done. Just waiting for more parts to come in. Any other advice will be greatly appreciated.
