this happened once before i got the truck on the road, just moving it around in the driveway. today it happened on my way home from work. i'm really hoping someone has come across the same or similar problem and was able to resolve it.

the time in the driveway i was trying to rev it up to get it to warm up one day. when pushing the gas pedal it almost seemed the rpms went flat (not sure how else to describe it). it never happened again, until today on the road, so i never thought anymore about it.

today the rpms dropped to near 500 and then picked up to around 750 (normal) when i pulled into a parking spot. when i left the parking lot 5min later and got on the road the rpms again dropped and the truck just died. i immediately cranked the key and it fired right up when i hit the gas it bogged and died again. repeat this about 3 or 4 times, once right in the middle of a busy street. then i revved the crap out of it and dropped the clutch and away i went. drove the 2min back to my house and didn't try to over rev it above 2500rpm, seemed okay.. i was just happy to get it home without a tow bill.

gas gauge is around 1/2 but i don't know if it works or not, only had the truck a short time and haven't driven it to work until today (10min one way)

it's a 92 B2200 FI, 5spd with around 250,000mi on it

thanks

Check Your Fuel Filter. If that is ok drain the tank, rinse it out and blow out your fuel lines. Old fuel will turn to varnish and cause the problems you speak of. Also, the in tank fuel pump may be on its way out.

thanks bc ... that's what i was hoping not to hear lol

i'll start with the fuel filter

as it turns out.. my 99 astro kacked a fuel pump thursday night. i just filled the huge tank thurs am and will need as many empty gas cans as i can get ahold of before i drop the tank. decided to empty my large on into the b. turns out the freakin gas gauge is stuck at just around 1/2 a tank. thing runs great now that it actually has fuel in it
i'm going to change the fuel filter anyway being that it obviously was sucking the bottom of the tank..

seems to be unstuck now. i threw in $25 and that brought it up to over 3/4 of a tank. the gauge moves.. just real slow.

it still seems to want to idle really really low once it's warmed up. like it will drop to between 500 -600 rpm. that doesn't seem normal but i've never had a FI model before.

is that normal? just feels like its going to die.

what controls the idle on a FI 2.2? is it cleanable? adjustable?

to bring this one back from the dead.... I changed fuel filter, clean fuel...

since driving it a lot more, i have noticed, at idle, that when it goes in to gear (it's a 5 spd) it rpms drop. when i pull it out of gear they rise back up. just depressing the clutch on it's own has no effect. again, it's a 92 FI

so, why would or what controls the rpm to rise and fall, at idle, when it's either in or out of a gear?

Is the truck stock?

UN modified?

No Bags, Bows, or fuzzy dice?

Not sliced, diced, or iced?

Not smothered or covered?

Yes, or no.

Does it have power steering, from the factory?

Does it have a factory-installed, working AC?

What about the radio? Original or aftermarket?

If the vehicle you have is factory stock, it will simplify trouble isolation.

If you or the previous owners have scribbled outside of factory parameters, do me a favor and let me know, as my skill set does not extend to assisting goober and gomer pyle madifications gone bad. Hacked and
highjacked wiring / alarm systems / aftermarket cruise controls / popalocks / etc. sometimes cause the issues. Phantom loads / floating grounds / careless or negligent junctions. . .

As much I I would like to help everyone on the face of the planet, I have to set some boundaries.

Factory schematics only go so far.

I would appreciate a response from you within 8 hours.

bone stock, no ac with ps. no mickey mouse wiring

Thanks for the rapid turn around response.

Let me get some additional information.

. .just for clarification, normally, the engine will idle at what speed, and then it drops to 500 or so?

Do you have a tach, or is this estimation?

I will try to look at a schematic and get some information later, but for now. . .

This happens with the engine cold or when hot only?

Does it happen if you try other gears. . .just for problem isolation. . .idling in neutral, normal, put in third / reverse, etc. . . same results no matter what gear?

I know the normal 5 speed uses only 2 switches. . . one is reverse. If the Fi unit uses the other switch input to tell the computer something about vehicle operation, your "easy" workaround might be unplugging it (or jumping it out) for now. If you can stick your head up under the truck and see if you have only two switches on the transmisson it might help figure out what is happening.

Do you have a multimeter or any test equipment?
