ok. . .
back from some research. . .
both the neutral switch and reverse switch are located on the extension housing. . .
You aren't going to see either of them unless you get under the truck. . .
one switch has bullet connectors. . .two wires. . .with the key ON, engine OFF, with the shifter in reverse, reverse lights should be ON. . . unplug one bullet cnx. . . reverse lights should now be off. . . plug wire back in. . .reverse lights should now be on. . . that is your reverse switch, ok?
The other switch is the NEUTRAL switcfh. . .it has two wires. . .with BOX connectors. . .in neutral. . .continuity either exists, or it does not. . .that is the state you must have to keep the idle circuit stable.
This is just a temporary / semi-permanent work=a=round until other things can be verified.
If you cannot find the switches by actually climbing under the truck, the harness enters the transmission tunnel via a wire bundle which comes down the passenger side of the engine. . .you can follow that harness to where it terminates at the switches.
There is an offhand chance that you got a vehicle that has had the automatic swapped out for a manual. If that is the case, there is going to be some work required to verify correct wiring.
Because you own an OBD 1 system. . .your check engine light will not necessarily illuminate to tell you of a hard failure, but the codes (if any) can be retrieved by grounding out the test (green) connector. That is something that might be worth investigating. . .I don't have the link, but it is a recent post on the board.
