I had the same issue with my 86 B2000, It would lose accelaration, and kinda bog down and have a popping/backfiring issue. I assumed that it was either timing, or bad fuel. I tested everything out and it was still doing it. I ultimatly had to do a compression check on my exhaust system. My cat convertor that came off the stock manifold was clogged. This was couseing me to build back pressure up in the engine which resulted in a loss of power and a popping/backfiring sound. I pulled my Cat convertor off and drove a prybar into it shattering the honey comb, cleaned it out and remounted it. Just for added mesure i took a sawzaw and cut the cat convertor out from under the truck (inline on the lower pipe) and welded in a piece of pipe. this corrected the issues that i was having, and gave me back all the power and stopped all the popping until i drug my muffler off a month ago LOL. Now, for state inspection purposes this may not be logical for you to do. Mine was over 25 yrs old and didnt need to meet emission requirements. Hope this helps you out. post up the progress and let us know how things are going with your ride
