87 B2200, 5 spd.

Exhaust has had a metallic rattling noise at around 2000 rpm for quite some time. I thought it was the heat shield on the Cat, but when I took the shield off it still rattled - just not as loud. So its the insides of the Cat. making the noise.
Anyone know of a cheap and dirty way to quiet these things down? I was wondering if drilling a hole and driving a large screw in there would help, but I don't know what's inside these things. Any ideas on this?

A screw would help, but only for a short time. Inside is a ceramic honeycomb(if you will), that's plated with platinum. The screw will put pressure on it, but only until vibration causes the screw to wear away at the ceramic. Then you're right back here again.
You can replace it, or learn to live with it.

Thanks Sin. I think I'll just replace it now that I know they're not a ton'o bucks.

Just read about this:
"Any malfunction causing an unusually high level of
unburned HC (Hydrocarbons

Try boiling some water til its nice n hot and pour into the convertor, this cleans them up nicely. Old trick learned working at a body shop.

If you replace it take the old one to a good recycler. They should give you a good bit-o-money for it. They will get even more from the Platinum.

Thanks for the tips - Chrome and others.

I think the Cat has cleaned itself out by now. I gets damn hot so I think its working OK. That noise though, that I gotta fix!

I've also seen people just punch the honey combs out lol. Idk if thats an option. But if can find a cheap cat go for it.

Are you sure it's the cat, and not the muffler?

It's probably not the cat mines was just some of the top cat falling apart and ended up in that short pipe between the two cats
