Ya you were on the right track Sin & aLittlelow. I beat on my Cat with a rubber mallet - the one on the truck. Anyway, it seemed like the whole pipe was rattling, couldn't really narrow it down. So, I unbolted the intermediate pipe in front of the cat at both ends and removed it (not easy of course, had to heat the helloutofit (flange nuts) with my little propane torch, barely got it hot enough to brake loose the nuts). Took my mallet to the Cat again, after several loud screeching meows it finally quieted down...just kidding you cat lovers. Well, the Cat didn't make much noise. Hmm, so I beat on that pipe in front - rattle, rattle with every hit. OK, got it! These pipes up front are double-walled and the inside of this one was in pieces obviously. Found a replacement at Rock. Intermediate Pipe (Walker #43094) about $36 plus shipping. Not too bad.
I'll be cruizin' in style again soon (lol, I'd take a picture but it would be embarrassing, runs good though). Pretty impressive actually for a 28 yr old truck with about 150K mi. The only mechanical things I've done (other than standard tune-up and maint.) are timing belt, water pump, radiator, partial re-build of carb., ignitor, ignition coil, stabilizer bar links, oh ya, I had a rear axle bearing go out, had to get a rear axle assy. from the junkyard... that's about it. I guess that's why I keep her around.
