I own a 1990 B2600 with hydraulic lifters! And it has been and still is a great runner. But like many B series owners my Hyd-lifters, from what I

When I was looking to buy my '88 B2200 back in Aug. 1994, I asked the owner about it's valve ticking noise. His response was that's what they do.

So 19 years later, still ticks a times, and not at others....here in Arizona we mostly have the windows up and AC on full blast, so we don't hear it that much....

Well i've had mine click n tick a few times, an they are brand new probably barely 10k miles on them if that. and they clicked 3-4 times on me for few days, first time i ran seafoam through after an oil change, rest times i just let it tick, the last an final time it happened i was just in an ill mood, so i went to an abandoned construction yard that had been recenty tore down. my truck was ticking and pissin me off even more just cause of my mood lmao. But i started just raisin hell whippin shitties and roastin the tires just good ole fun. afterwards and once i sat an smoked a cig i noticed my engine wasn't ticking anymore; so i'd suggest trying get on it a lil bit, maybe somethings clogged ( gunk whatever) in your lifter making it collapse, and a nice lil hard run will blow it out. Not sure if it will fix everyones or anyone else's ticking but just something that i noticed fterwards, she hasn't ticked one day since ( knock on wood)

Cusser,

Unfortunately mine didn't come with AC. I'd use the radio but the s__t they broadcast is, in my opinion, more annoying then listening to the noisy lifters!

xXChromeGhostXx,

You may be on to something. Maybe what I need is to blow the cobwebs out of the old girl now an then.

I don't hit much over 4K rpm but once in a blue moon, most of my driving is in the 2-3 K range. I don't lug the engine mind you, it's just that the more mature I get (say oldguy) the less desire I have to pound the gears.

Again about that notorious tic, tic, tic. Does anyone know if these engines were designed with exceptionally short piston skirts? Short piston skirts when properly fitted cause less drag on the cylinder wall, hence more HP, improved gas milage, etc..

The reason I ask is short piston skirts, after about 100k miles, if not desigend properly, have a tendency to wear and rock back and forth as the travel up and down the cylinder wall and can generate a tapping/clicking especialy when the engine is cold.

Just another thought as to possible source for the infamous clicking noise!

My 86 with adjustable lifters makes noise at idle constantly... I've adjusted and adjusted it keeps making noise... I just deal with it. My motor runs strong. I haven't ever gone above 5 grand on rpms (motor has over 200k) but mine does fine. It runs good has never left me stranded (from motor issues anyways) I say just let it be. Idk tho maybe I'm ignoring a bigger issue here.

Fred.

That sucks bro, hate to hear that they stil tick with adjustable lifters. Not sure but try running some lucas through it? Might just be a slightly dried seal somewhere inside causing one your lifters to improperly rise and fall causing a tic? IDK just a thought.

OldGUy.

I have 220k + and rising, buut like i said i have a new head and i have a olid pressure test reading a week ago ( was tracking oil leak down) But I was told that with these hydraulic lifters that sometimes they just get stuck idk why they dunno why but it's something that just happens, wont hurt your engine or anything just annoying. But as i said was told these hydraulic lifters tend to stick or collapse, maybe if you don't run them a little hard every now and then they get complacent and say TA DA SCREW YOU TICK TICK TICK DIVE ME HARDER TICK TICK! lol. I know my truck had been sitting for many many months and not started consistently so as it sat lifters collapsed and just need pressure pushed back into them from how it turned out to act ( mine anyways ).I have no Tach myself, i listen to my engine whine and just the feel of the vehicle tself as i play with the gears. Now i don't go everyday raisin hell chirpin gears in my truck hell no i want it to last. But every now and then i pull out in my driveway and just sit there letting the smoke boil out lol, no real reason for it other than i wanna have a little fun before i settle down with the truck, and 2 it's funny to see ne of our local volunteer firemen ( personal vehicles with lights no trucks) come and see wtf all the smoke came from ( only 1/4 mile from fire station ). But just try giving your B a lil rough what for sometime and see what happens.

I honestly don't know what it is that causes the damn tick. It could be just worn parts it's the og motor without ever being rebuilt. I'm not too worried about it at this point I have bigger things to worry about.(like carrier bearing, emissions testing, along with everything else in my life!) I'll just stock it up as something that gives my truck a little bit more character, lol.

Haha, yup it's ok though my friends have already named my truck the mad ticker even though it doesn't tick no more

Last week during an oil and filter change I put in 10-40w in lieu of the usual 10-30w with the idea that given enough time the heavier 10-40 should replace the lighter 10-30 in the lifters.

It will probably take some time but if I live long enough to see it happen, I believe the 10-40 will help eliminate some of the more severe tapping brought on I suspect from some of the lifters having bleed down after the 2600 has sat for more than a few days. Especially after a long drive during one of the unusually warm days we've been having lately.

Oil doesn't change out very fast in Hyd lifters so it could be a while.

A year ago we took the B2200 on vacation to Bisbee, Arizona, and I was taking a photo of the truck in front of a historic post office there, I had left the engine running just to shoot the photo, and an old guy (OK: my age) walks out and says "your lifters are ticking".

I guess in 19 years of having it, I just don't pay much attention...
