so i posted a thread about my valves ticking, now i got my valve cover off and all my tools out, whats the next step to clean my valve lifters? the manual barley mentions anything about it

You have to loosen the rocker shafts so you can remove the lifters. I think those are held in place by 12 mm headed bolts. You have to be careful because everything is spaced with the springs and the front of the bars are held down by the cam plate. You might want to take a couple of pictures so you see how everything is oriented or draw a picture. You don't need to take the bolts out all the way, just loosen them enough so you can slide the entire assembly to the rear out of the cam plate. The lifters should basically fall out of the rockers once there is enough spacing for them to do so. Use grease to hold them in place when you get then cleaned to hold them in the rockers.

ok so the lifters are in the rockers, when i unbolt them slightly to loosen them i can slide them/the assembly back to clear the valve heads? then they will fall out.

do i need to mess with timing, top dead center, cam chain,things of that sort and etc?

No you should be good if you can just wiggle them out and back in.

awesome, thank you. also when i loosen them should i do a crisscross pattern?

Don't be surprised if some of them required some pliers to pull them out - depending on condition. Just try to pull them straight out and not damage the ring on the outside of them if they don't fall out.

If you find some with excessing wear on the top, yo might want to replace them. You can usually pick up them up by the set cheaper than buying them individually. So if you need two or three, I would probably just replace them all.

I have a couple of videos of the cleaning and then re-priming process on this thread:

Also, as long as you have the valve cover off, there are a handful of things that you might want to address at the same time (PCV Valve Grommet, Breather Tube, Resonator O-ring). I've written them up here:

ok so over the last 2 days ive had my truck apart working on this. i ended up completely taking the rocker assembly out because the lifters were not coming out at all while assembled. cleaned the lifters, soaked them in atf, pumped the primer 30+ times while it was in the atf (left them full of atf) and put everything back togethor. and its still ticking...although its A LOT quieter, maybe after a few more miles of driving itll go away for good. and i replaced the pcv grommet, O ring, breather hose, and the distributor dust o ring. amazing how much better it sounds. feels a little more snappy in the throttle response too

Hopefully it will improve some more... but there is certainly no guarantee. Some have had perfect success, and some people have had little reduction in ticking. At least you have made some significant progress.

<fingers crossed>

im writing back, and i have not had a tick since! it totally worked! it took about 25ish miles till it went away, but now i can hear my exhaust manifold leak and my squeaky suspension more lol

Cool. Congratulations!

Now you just need a bigger amp and speakers and the other noises will go away.

Just kidding. Eat the elephant one bite at a time. Do get that exhaust taken care of though. Don't want to screw around with that.

When you start chasing the suspension squeaks, remember that U-joints can squeak too.
