HAS ANYONE ELSE EVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE RPM RUNNING HIGHER BECAUSE OF AN ALTERNATOR GOING OUT....ONE MY TEACHERS AT THE COLLEGE SAID IT WILL DO THAT BECAUSE WHEN THE BATTERY STARTS TO GET LOW THE MOTOR THINKS IT NEEDS TO SPIN FASTER TO CHARGE THE BATTERY BUT IF THE ALTERNATOR ISNT WORKING IT JUST SPINS FAST AND DOESNT CHARGE ANYTHING. IT SEEMS LOGICAL, BUT I THOUGH ALTERNATORS PRODUCED JUST AS MUCH AMPERAGE AT IDLE AS THEY DID AT 60 MPH. I MEAN WITHIN REASON, IT MIGHT PRODUCE A LITTLE MORE WITH A HIGHER RPM BUT NOTHING THAT WOULD MAKE THAT HUGE OF A DIFFERENCE. ANYONE EVER EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM OR HEARD OF THAT THEORY?

When the alternator went out on my 97 Explorer, it acted similar. The RPM's would go up for a few minutes and then down to below normal. The guys at the auto electric shop said that they were normal symptoms of a bad alternator. Since I changed it, all has been good.

COOL, CAUSE IVE HAD ONE GO OUT IN IT BEFORE AND IT DIDNT ACT LIKE THAT BUT WHAT MY TEACHER TOLD ME SEEMED LOGICAL. WELL THATS HOW IT RAN ITS LAST MILE SO IT WILL BE ALL FIXED IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS.

On the older cars the Alt doesnt recive any signals from the pcm so it wouldnt adjust the RPMs, Alt produce less volts at idle then at a higher RPM, At higher RPOM the alt spins faster and Voltage increases,
Plus it also depends on the load put on the alt

okay well for the last two months ive been out in the garage almost everynight for a few hours working on the toyota trying to get it finished. so far, ive gotten the motor pulled out and put into the shop to be built, send the valve cover, intake manifold, some brackets, pullies, and some other smaller pieces out to chrome. hopefully ill get all that stuff back by next weekend. anyways once the motor was out, i cut my fenderwells out and started to tub the new ones which will be finished tomorrow. heres some progress pictures.
