Ok I need a little help with Identifying a manual transmission. I have 2 manual tranny's that are supposed to be 5spd. Now that I talked to the previous owner he says he can't recall if they are 4 or 5 speeds.

Maybe I am overlooking casting #'s or markings but I cant physically see any difference between my known 4 speed and the other 2 transmissions in question. Everything I have found to help id these things is based around the 4x4 transmissions.

put the shifter into each one and try to slide it into 5th gear. even without the clutch it should still go into gear. you might have to wiggle it but never the less...

when i get my 4 spd. back from the tranny shop i can take a picture for you. maybe there would be something on it that you can compare your with.

All three will go into "5th" That is why I am having a hard time trying to figure this out. When I drove the truck wit the original 4spd I would forget about it being 4 gears instead of 5 or 6.

Usually there should be something identifying them or something that is different about the case, more than likely all 3 will be 4spds.

i dont get it...if they go into 5th, then arent they 5 speeds? lol. i've never tried to shift it into a gear with the tranny out of the truck before but when itwas in the truck when i would accidentally forget i was driving a 4 i would go to shift into 5th and it wouldnt go anywhere past the neutral spot unless i downshifted into 3rd.

The 4 and 5 speed trannys have different mounting patterns for the bushing. I can take a picture of my mount on my 5 speed. I also have a brand new tranny mount for a 4 speed. It was supposed to be for a 5 speed, but the box says its for a 4 speed trans.

I thought you had mentioned on a previous post about the mounts being different but I couldn't find it. That would be cool if you has some info on this Seth.

Well they don't technically go into 5th gear, they go into the slot where 5th should be. Many, many times I had forgotten the truck was a 4 spd and shifted into 5th and it didn't do anything. I'm just wanting some info because if one of them is a 5spd its going in the truck. I don't want to spend all the extra time cleaning, replacing seals, painting, etc..... and finding out after its in the truck that its a 4spd after all.

oh i get it, yeah i've caught myself doing that sometimes....or because i drive my truck all the time, sometimes when i get into something with a 5 ill forget to shift into 5th. lol.

while we're on the subject of trannys, i heard somewere that the rear ends were geard differently for the 4 spd. tranny and 5 spd. tranny. is that true?
