If I am not mistaken a new starter from toyota cost over 400 bucks. If you can find a place close to where you live, buy a rebuilt one, or have them rebuild yours. Its alot cheaper and if they do it right it is just as good as new.

Rebuilt from the dealer for my 88 ( no new ones avilable) $99 w/ core.
Also make sure you have a good ground connection from the battery. On mine I ran a 0 ga. from the battery to the block!

ok i had the same prob with my 87 22r i never found out the prob but when i hit the starter it would work perfectly somthing about the shims im told try a new starter from orileys or autozone that seemed to take care of it always........its kinda funny i never owned a bagged truck but i worked on 22r,22re,and 22ret's for about 4 years and i know almost everything there is to know about the motor....the prob you are having is not an oncommon one i had to fix about 4 of them the teeth on the flywheel and the starter seem to stop matching up after a few years and a few hundred thousand miles!!!!!!! 22r and 22re best motor in existance....toyotas excuse for stoping production was actually that they could not make any money of the parts that they made because they were so damn reliable i sold my old one for $900 and it had 280,000 miles!!!!

well i replaced the starter and i can start it now problem was in the starter and the connection in the starter lead so it works now but now it takes a while for my truck to start and my battery ends up dying every time is it cause the starter has to break in? i wish i could stop havin all these engine problems damn 22r

No break in on this part! If your battery goes dead check the condition of the battery, not just the votage,& the alternator!
