I have had the dust caps off mine for over 10 years and never had problems. If you want to, while the wheels are off, you can pop the wheel center caps in and run a bead of silicone around the inside perimeter of the backside of the wheel centers to make sure no dust and moisture gets in. Before you put the wheels back on, be liberal with the grease on the end of the spindle, etc. and put the wheels on. Periodically (rotating tires, etc.) you can regrease them while the wheels are off....no worries. Not really sure what is ghetto about that. I see a lot more "ghetto" things than that on most minitrucks.
