i wonder if it would be ok to just weld that hole shut?

Well, u could tig it, real yorks are aluminum. I've seen people tap it and put a set screw in it, which looks better, but takes a bit more time. Put a screw in from the top and be done with it, but if u got time to make stuff like that look perfect, go ahead. LOL ok up for 24 hours, i'm going to bed...

i was thinking mig and then using a die grinder to smooth it out.

the thing to do on a York is do the oil mod for sure, but you still need a slight amount of oil in the cyinders to keep them from scorching. best to use an airtool oiler and also a oil water trap on the outlet side. the you should only need to add oil to the crankcase every month. if you run one of these alot you will need oil going in or you will still burn it up.

joe.. dont even bother welding it shut. you will never see it, and it will take you more time to set up the welder than it will to tap the hole. you don't even need to drill the hole out to tap it, just use the right size set screw... thats what i did. honestly it took under 2 minutes.

and your york will use quite a bit of oil until it breaks in. even with the oil mod, i used quite a bit at first, but after a month or two of use, and switching to 30W non-detergent oil, i rarely ever have to oil it.

and AIM has nothing to do with real sanden compressors. the SD-508 is an awesome compressor, and is just as reliable as a york.

I remember reading on here that someone tapped into the oil line on their motor and oiled it that way. They put a seperator on the output side and just had it drain back into their oil pan. Now for the life of me i can't remember where i read that though.

I talked to someone at oasis awhile back and they said they have tested many different yorks and that the oil mod with the screw is worse than not using it on a brand new comp. But venting the fill hole on the side works good. They sell the little vent that they use but you can get the pieces from the hardware store. I can't remember for sure but it seems like it was like a 1/4 or 3/8 flare to pipe fitting screws into the hole perfect. I used the oring from the plug on that then just hooked a piece of 1/4 airline to a barbed fitting off that and ran it down under my truck. It does spit some oil out of it but I tend to overfill it because I cant check the oil where it is mounted. Oasis said on used compressors the oil mod may seem to work.

thats the reason for oiling the cylinder, so they last longer and dont scorch the pistons and cylinders. you need oil going in (only a small amount) a oil seperator on the outlet and to check the crankcase oil every so often.

don't forget a check valve either, or you will have a dead york on your hands.
