Black Iron pipe IS strong enough to use for crossmembers, even bridges for bags, hydros, etc. I built a bridge out of it, bent the tubing (Without kinking it I might add, not easy) and ran hydros with it for about 4 years, now, 7 years later, after I cut it off 3 years ago and welded it to another truck, it's still going strong. As long as you clean it up good enough (Very important) and get good penetration, It should work fine. Tubing would be the correct stuff to use, but you gotta do what you gotta do I guess.

my link bar mounts are made from it. and lasted hella long. u just have to know what to use it for because it isnt the strongest shit in the world but will work perfectly when used for the right application

I think a lot of people use it and have used it.Its known as schdule pipe in 40 and 80 if im not mistaken 80 is the thicker wall tubing and that you need to get at steel yard.It sounds as if he had the heat to high when he welded he could have had good penatration and good welding surface..but if he got the metal too hot it makes it brittle around the edge..which is why in most cases the tubing cracks instead of the weld.Thats my guess as to why..and jump up to the schedule 80

Yea I wanna say its schedule 80 too. But I`m thinking it was not prepared right. My upper 4-link bars, as well as 2 of my buddy's, are made out of this tunbing and it works like a charm!

alot of the times we will use schedule 40 black pipe, and it works like a dream. shit we made a set of lower control arms for the ranger out of it, and a year and a half later of pretty much daily driving (and dragging lol) they are still holding strong.
