soo, russ, could he not check the compression when it's cold, let it warm up and check the compression again? if theres a considerable difference, then it would be the rings, if they weren't that different, it would be seals.

Of course he could. Most people dont have a compression tester though and I was just giving him something to base from without hunting down a compression tester. Obviously if you think the rings are bad you will want to do a compression test.

It doesnt take but a very small amount of oil to make a massive quantity of smoke, given his switching from thick oil to thin would adequately explain why it started smoking like crazy all of the sudden. Rings, that will get progressively worse unless you break one.

Another whing you can do is pull the oil cap and check for blowby when cold, if the rings are the culprit there will be a lot of exhaust fumes in the upper engine.

could be a vaccum line too, when the choke is closed it tries to pull air from anywhere it can, if there is oil in your vacuum lines you could just be sucking it into the combustion through the carb and it has nothing to do with seals or rings. Pull your brake booster line, I have also seen a master cylinder leak that seeped into the booster and got sucked into the intake, now THAT is a lot of smoke.

i will check into the vacume lines and other odd places oil can be sucked into.

i called my head guy today and got his opinion. as far as checking valve stem seals he said to get into 3rd or so and roll it hard(maybe 4500rpm or so) and let it decel a bit then give it a quick stab at the throttle and if it puffs smoke when you stab it-that would indicate valve stem seals.

i did and didnt get a lick of smoke.

he suggested rings. but it runs so damn good! im gonna see if i can find some kind of 'internal' oil leak and see if its being sucked from elsewhere.

Thats a good test for valve GUIDES, but stem seals have little sprung loaded rubber rings that crack and let oil down by the guides when cold.

so what did you find out My 92 smokes bad on start up. i thought it was the seals (valve) so i replaced them still smoked. then last week i drove it all week and no smoke (it was wormer)then friday nite i get in and leave work and it smokes like a mother. runs good just smokes bad (it was colder befor last week) im running 10w-30 oil as well with 161,000 miles

iv found that out myself, if its warmer outside it doesnt smoke nearly as much. but really i havent found out anything new. since the smoking does stop after a minuet, i think im gonna just deal with it for a while. im not sure what else to do.

theirs talk about elimination of the emissions testing for the metro denver area this year or next so im gonna hold off and do a 4.3 or a small block if they get rid of emissions. why replace a 4 banger and get 4 banger performance when i can small block it or the like- you know?

so check it out. today was cold. like less than 40 degress. i start it up and the only smoke i get is fuel smoke. the carbon blowing out the exhaust from the choke. now granted the oil is like about as thick as it gets at this point which would seal rings but iv got straight 60 weight in it. why wouldent the thick oil seal when its a little warmer outside.
